The challenger who defeated Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday night campaigned on a suite of socialist policy demands, from a single-payer health-care system to a guaranteed job for every American.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, ran on issues well outside the mainstream of the Democratic Party, including health care, the environment and criminal justice. Her campaign in the Bronx and Queens district lifted her above Crowley, who raised more than $3 million for his campaign.
Ocasio-Cortez also vocally backed calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency created in 2003 and increasingly decried by left-leaning activists for its punitive impact on undocumented residents. Only a handful of sitting House Democrats have called for the abolition of ICE, and Crowley did not.
Ocasio-Cortez an activist who worked as a restaurant server less than a year ago summarized her policy platform on a one-page sheet distributed at her campaign headquarters in Queens.
Not all these policies reflect legislation that can be signed into law, and many hurdles remain before they could be implemented. Republicans retain control of Congress, and even if Democrats were to take power, it's unclear how many members of the Democratic Party would be on board. These proposals would also involve overhauling rules governing large parts of the U.S. economy, and many details would have to be worked out including financing.

(81,901 posts)Its like talking about abolishing the IRS. You can get rid of both, but you still need someone to do the work. So someone will do the same thing under a different name.

(62,444 posts)She should just come out and say that it is time to end the ban on trade in ivory.
Elephants? Heck, they are just Republicans anyway. Who gives a shit about elephants.

(62,444 posts)ICE does more than one thing.
Is the idea that immigration and customs laws and the mechanisms of enforcement are simply unnecessary in any form whatsoever?
She's okay with trade in ivory from poached elephants, and she's fine with counterfeit drugs. Is that what one is supposed to gather here?

(6,709 posts)And we had agencies handling those duties prior to the creation of Homeland Security and ICE. That agency exists w/o adequate supervision and apparently views every immigrant as a potential terrorist, particularly brown ones. I say we need to start over.

(92,551 posts)BILL. He actively joined protests against the TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S TRAVEL BAN AND ITS IMMIGRATION POLICIES, and after last nights election he ENTHUSIASTICALLY endorsed Ocasio-Cortez
So those trying to imply or portray Crowley as some "conservative Democrat", are either ignorant of his stances and voting record or are deliberately misleading.
Did Crowley make mistakes in his campaign, no doubt, and not showing up to debate Cortez probably contributed, but to characterize him as not a liberal Democrat is a gross misrepresentation, and false
