With executive order, Va. governor expands paid family leave for state employees

RICHMOND — Gov. Ralph Northam (D) signed an executive order Tuesday offering paid time off for state employees for the birth or adoption of a child, moving Virginia in line with a small but growing number of states.

Until Tuesday, Virginia provided parental leave only to employees who had given birth. And they had to use vacation time, sick time and then short-term disability, which provided only a fraction of their normal pay.

The new benefits, which took effect immediately, provide eight weeks of leave at full pay to mothers and fathers alike. Workers who become parents through adoption or foster placement are also eligible.

“The steps we are taking today will support the growth of our children, help parents in managing a work-life balance, contribute to a healthier and more productive workforce, and make the government of this Commonwealth an even more attractive place to work,” Northam, a pediatrician, said in a written statement.

You can turn your nose up and dismiss actual progress all you want, but actual reform doesn't happen in one swoop - no matter what a politician might promise.

If you have no car, and need one, and someone offers you a used hatchback, you don't say "Wow, a 5 year old compact with high mileage. That's lame. My neigbor drives a new Explorer. "

It must be nice to be in a position to sniff at actual legislative gains in the area of paid family leave.

Not all of us are so privileged.

while blue states are moving upward with decent legislation that supports it's people.

What the fucked 5 US Supreme Court Justices are doing is hurting the United States of America all for profit. The states that will be hurt the most is the red states.
