No detention center will come to Concord, CA 'at this time'
CONCORD No immigration detention camp will come to the former Concord Naval Weapons Station at this time, according to an internal city email, despite an earlier reported internal Navy memo drafting plans to house up to 47,000 detainees on the shuttered base.
I was recently advised by California Office of Emergency Services high ranking officials that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said there will be no relocation camps established in Concord, or anywhere in California. FYI at this time, Contra Costa County Sheriff David Livingston wrote to county supervisors, according to a city of Concord email.
The news would alleviate concerns from city and regional officials who said such a tent city would cause major problems at the base, which still has contamination issues. It also came hours before an emergency special meeting Wednesday afternoon in Concord to discuss the proposed detention center.
Late last week TIME reported the Navy proposal to construct the temporary detention facilities on military bases across the country, including in Concord and at Camp Pendleton in Southern California, citing a draft memo.
At the meeting, Concord official Guy Bjerke, who coordinates the citys base reuse plan, said Navy officials have continued to say the memo was simply an effort to prepare options in the event the Department of Homeland Security asked for them to house immigrants.
