Worked there as an Expat for a couple of years, and have an employer down there ready to take me in, and get my visa renewed.

I’ve transferred most of my savings to Itau bank, still have my investment in the Brazillian pension plan.

There’s 1 of 2 big signs that I’ve been waiting for to pull the trigger on this move:
1. A “reichstag fire” type event empowering this administration.
2. Successful elimination of gay marriage, or the reinstatement of targeted sodomy laws.

This shift in the SCOTUS could be the trigger for #2.

trying to get my foot in the door in Windsor. It's all so overwhelming to picture leaving family and friends behind... But at least I'd be there and could hopefully sponsor them in somehow if things hit the fan. Ideally I'd like to be there before the elections (would vote early or absentee). If our worst fears and suspicions about dump are true, then we all should have a backup plan in mind. Think about it: trump has done nothing to stop election meddling, and Putin can switch off our power. That's huge!

My mother lives here near us and is 91. She cannot move anywhere else. However, if things do not change in November and if my mother is no longer with us, we are seriously looking at Panama. The dollar is their currency and there is a very active expat community there. Costa Rica is another option, but Panama has a great program for foreign retirees and very good medical care. I have read that a couple can live very comfortably there on $2000 per month. I don't want to move but I do not want to spend the last years of my life living in a trumpian theocracy either.

my husband and I arranged for permanent resident visas in Panama. At the time--2005--we had to purchase property and open a Panamanian bank account. We had Attorneys in Panama who helped us with the process.

The real estate project ran into labor problems and the American developers ignored the advice of their Panamanian attorneys by doing a land deal to expand the project that ended up in court. The whole thing came to a screeching halt. Eventually some of the investors took over and got the thing back on track, but we got our money back because when Obama was elected we thought we would no longer need an escape hatch.

Moral to the story. If you decide on Panama be sure you get good attorneys. If you want to PM me I can recommend the ones we used. Also, do NOT buy into anything that isn't already built, up and running.

for the kind offer. I may very well PM you should we go this route. We would plan on renting as opposed to buying, at least for a year or so. I am surprised you are not planning for an alternative option as well. We are looking at Panama because of its active expat community as well as its close proximity to the US mainland. My mother came here from Germany, so I do have many cousins still there. Germany is so far away though and very COLD.

rather than seeing what it would take to update the visa for Panama since my circumstances have changed in the last 10 years.

I am considering France. I would be going alone as I am going through a divorce. I'm looking at Lyon where I have a friend who has gone through the process of getting a resident visa. In his case he married the man of his dreams whom he met 6 years ago when my friend was there for a 6 week intensive summer course he was taking for his Master's degree in French to help him advance in his career as a French teacher in the Missouri public schools.

I don't know that I have the energy or stamina to deal with moving to another country at this point in my life, but I am considering going to Lyon next spring to live for 90 days in an apartment and try it out. I would be renting if I did make the move to France. I also have other native French friends who live in Paris and Aix en Provence. And yes, I do speak French but I would work on improving my conversation skills if I decided to make the move.

I had a visit from my college roommate this weekend. She has lived in Canada for fifty years. She and her husband left the US to escape the draft during the Vietnam War. They were young and had skills, so they were welcome. Her husband has since been granted amnesty, but they have stayed, because they have done well there.

If I won the lottery, and had sufficient funds to be welcome in Canada, I would go myself, and take whatever family members were willing with me.

I'm retired and Canada doesn't want me.

I visited a friend in Lyon last year who has been there for 5 or 6 years now. He's married to a French man. He loves Lyon and I could see myself living there, too. I am seriously considering going over for 90 days next spring when my apartment lease is up here to see if I'd like it by taking an apartment there. Found one online yesterday that he agreed was fabulous and in best part of town.

I also have a friend in Paris who is our French "daughter". She lived with us for a year as a foreign exchange student in 1989-90 and we have stayed in touch. Visited with her several times over the years and she has been here, too. In fact the friend in Lyon was friends with her in high school when she lived with us. I figure both of them would be resources to help navigate French bureaucracy if I were to decide to go for it after I try it out for 90 days. And yes I do speak French. It's pretty Rusty but I would start taking lessons during that 90 day trial to improve my language skills.

It's a very ambitious idea for me at 68, which I will be next spring.
And I would also be doing it alone since I am in the middle of a divorce. I have been on and off considering the idea since last fall. Tried to get my husband to do a substitute tropical island condo on Bonaire 3 years ago and he got cold feet. We also knew someone there who has lived there for 25 years and would help navigate their Visa process. That's another option but to do it I think I'd need more money than I am likely to get from selling our house. House has been on the market for a month but not sold yet. Certainly by next spring the house will have sold and I'll have a better picture of my finances for setting myself up to rent in France.
