General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsShould we all be urging our Democratic Senators to do everything they can
to encourage Jeff Flake to switch to the Democratic party for the remainder of his term?
Should we be begging Jeff Flake ourselves?
That would give us a majority in the Senate, at least till January, and we could stop any rightwing DT nominee from getting approved.
The Senate Majority leader would be a Democrat, and that Democrat would control the passage of all legislation and the activities of all committees. We could start subpoenaing witnesses NEXT WEEK.
FYI, Jeff Flake just wrote this about the Travel ban:
https://medium.com/@JeffFlake/travel-ban-b3c2234b986a (the link needs to be copied and pasted).
In April of 2017, when a District Court ruled against the Administrations travel ban, I wrote in this space that I thought that the Travel Ban would ultimately be upheld. I also wrote the following:
This does not, however, make the new travel ban a good idea. I fail to see what national security gains are achieved. In fact, our long term security goals are compromised. To win this war on terrorism we will need the help of good and decent citizens in every country including those countries compromised by terrorism. Imposing a blanket ban based on nationality will only make such assistance more difficult to obtain.
I feel the same today. Just because something is constitutional doesnt make it wise. The travel ban does not make us safer.
Flake and Corker talk shit but does nothing about it.

(42,854 posts)He's not "out". The selection of party leaders in the Senate is not like the selection of the Speaker. It is not done by the Senate as a whole. Rather, each party caucus selects its own leader. There is nothing that would prevent the republicans from allowing McCain to cast a vote for majority leader by phone or smoke signal. So as long as there are 50 elected republicans and 50 elected Democrats (or independents caucusing with the Democrats), it's a 50-50 split.
The last time there was a 50-50 split was in 2000-2001. Between the date of the election in November 2000 and the convening of the new Senate, the Democrat was viewed as the majority leader because Gore was still VP. After the convening of the new Senate, the Republican was considered the majority leader because Cheney was now the VP. With respect to committee assignments, the two sides worked out a sharing agreement. But in terms of who the Presiding Officer of the Senate recognized as the Majority Leader, it was the Republican.

(7,725 posts)is expected of him. I'm on the edge of tired of encouraging those who should be encouraging us.
We elect people to run the govt. I've haven't been so exhausted with doing THEIR work for them in several decades. Why aren't all our Democratic Senators and Congressmen/women getting on tv to be supportive? Wtf do we pay them for exactly? Are they all going to lead protests or speak with a crowd like Maxine? They say they come home to visit their districts...I'll be watching for them.
