(5,547 posts)As Americans, we have a collectively high opinion of ourselves so we seem to assume that other Countries would be happy to have us.
One thing we can be sure of. They wont take our children away when we seek asylum

(4,255 posts)To speak and read French and English is good. Having an essential occupation is good.
Maybe in the near future Americans can come in as a refugee. I did in 1969.
No regrets. I am only a Canadian now. I relinquished my US citizenship gladly.
I didn't know how I glad I would be at the time I did it.
I doubt I will go back now for a visit. I visited 40 states prior to Trump. All my American family are Trump lovers. . And they are very fascist.
Living in Canada is like being on DU for me. I am happy. I love my healthcare.

(27,821 posts)... to live here. I've been here since 1974, and have never changed my citizenship from US to Canadian.
To move here, you apply for "landed immigrant" status first. If accepted, you can reside here without becoming a citizen. However, if you choose to become a Canadian citizen once you have landed status, it is fairly easily done.

(3,363 posts)Does anyone know if Canada allows retirees to move there?
NanceGreggs
(27,821 posts)... means you are accepted as a permanent resident of Canada. You are thereby able to work here, and are entitled to benefits like healthcare coverage, and you pay income taxes if you work here.
Yes, retirees can live here, but I don't know what the parameters are in terms of how much income you have from pensions, SS, savings and investments, etc. In other words, you can't retire here if you have no income or other monies, as you would not be eligible for a Canadian pension having never contributed to it.
In order to have healthcare coverage, you must pay an annual fee for that - it's not free, but it's nowhere near what it costs to get coverage in the States.

(1,461 posts)condition that is deemed to be a drain on the state, you will not get approved, even if you marry a Canadian or are a nuclear family member. Same for Brits trying to move there.
