In 1961 #JFK appointed my grandfather Thomas DAlesandro Jr to the Federal Renegotiation Board (see Mom at far left)

Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. was Mayor of Baltimore from 1947-1959. His daughter, Nancy D'Alesandro seated center, became the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now known as Nancy Pelosi.

(8,363 posts)Grew up in the D.C. area in the 50s and 60s. Gloves were in fashion there, even for little girls.

It phased out over time and we were left with a neat little pile of dainty, linen, lightly embroidered gloves as a reminder.

(5,744 posts)We never went downtown to shop without dressing up with hat and gloves. My mother always said, "You may wear gloves without a hat, but never a hat without gloves." This was indeed the style of the times. We were very much at the lower income level in those days, but it did not matter. There were social norms to follow!

(15,329 posts)I can do without the rest of it, but I love hats. I wish I had social occasions to wear them, but I live in America and don't go to church or the Kentucky Derby.
