Speaker Pelosi

sfpelosi ?@sfpelosi
In 1961 #JFK appointed my grandfather Thomas D’Alesandro Jr to the Federal Renegotiation Board (see Mom at far left)

Ms. Pelosi, left, then Nancy D’Alesandro, at the White House in 1961 with President John F. Kennedy and her parents, Annunciata and Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. Mr. D’Alesandro was a congressman and the mayor of Baltimore. _William Allen/Associated Press

...I knew I'd see Nancy Pelosi as Speaker again. This is a great day!

Also, why is she wearing gloves? Was that a fashion thing?

Grew up in the D.C. area in the 50s and 60s. Gloves were in fashion there, even for little girls.

...especially out socially in D.C..

It phased out over time and we were left with a neat little pile of dainty, linen, lightly embroidered gloves as a reminder.

We never went downtown to shop without dressing up with hat and gloves. My mother always said, "You may wear gloves without a hat, but never a hat without gloves." This was indeed the style of the times. We were very much at the lower income level in those days, but it did not matter. There were social norms to follow!

I can do without the rest of it, but I love hats. I wish I had social occasions to wear them, but I live in America and don't go to church or the Kentucky Derby.
