Who died and made Ellen DeGeneres the gay pope?

In December, comedian Kevin Hart’s appointment to host the 2019 Academy Awards drew renewed attention to his hateful and damaging comments about gay people. The academy asked Hart to apologize: he refused and bowed out just days after the initial announcement. Many LGBTQ people cheered the withdrawal as the right move.

But now, in an interview that aired Friday on her daytime talk show, DeGeneres has absolved Hart of his ugly history. DeGeneres, who is gay, shared during the interview that she’d even interceded to ask the Oscars organizers to reconsider Hart as host. Apparently, they’re amenable: The ultimatum perhaps wasn’t so much of an ultimatum after all, and in the end, “We want him to host,” DeGeneres says she was told. “Whatever we can do we would be thrilled.”

Et tu, Ellen? As strange as this spectacle may seem, it’s actually in keeping with DeGeneres’s brand of nice. It’s a value she has sought to spread through the world, long signing off her show by telling her audience, “Be kind to one another.” Kindness means giving second chances, and giving second chances apparently means allowing Hart, who in 2011 tweeted that if his son played with a dollhouse he would “break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay,’ ” to host the most prestigious event in American cinema — one that’s also known as the Gay Super Bowl for its celebration of fashion and drama. On the set of DeGeneres’s show, anyone who thinks otherwise is simply a hater.

More important, even if Hart had more fully repented, his sins are not DeGeneres’s to forgive. She faced professional danger and personal scorn in her early and courageous trailblazing, but she’s at a place in her life and career where she’s largely protected from the kind of violence Hart described. Hart’s remarks were directed to queer people of color, who are generally much more vulnerable than their white counterparts. A 2017 poll from NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Harvard showed that LGBTQ people of color are twice as likely to have experienced discrimination in hiring and police interactions as white LGBTQ people, and that they are six times as likely to not call the police in a threatening situation so as to avoid reprisal.

Lesbians aren't the target of physical violence as much as gay men. Gay men get killed because of the hateful attitudes of people like Kevin Hart. Ellen is turning into the gay Oprah. She thinks she's an authority on everything.

Given that there has not been a great deal of scholarship study of violence against lesbian or was it violence against woman, I strongly urge you to reconsider your statement. " Lesbians aren't the target of physical violence as much as gay men"

But she shouldn't expect to speak for all LGBTQ people. I don't believe for one second that Hart regrets his hateful statements. I don't forgive him. Rewarding him with a second chance to host the Oscars is just validating his hatred and slyly acknowledging that it's OK to bash LGBTQ people. I'm really disappointed in Ellen.

Everyone should watch the multiple segments in their entirety, before they swallow Mr. Goins take on it...

Drew Goins is a digital producer at Washington Post.

Apparently he has never, in his entire (very short) life, done or said anything that he now regrets. How absolutely fabulous! He graduated from UNC in 2016. He is still a mere baby.

I watched the segment in question and Mr. Hart has obviously changed his opinions on a lot of things since he was doing his standup comedy routine, and was, as he admitted, saying a lot of things he shouldn't have, in the quest for laughs. Comediennes do tend to scrap the bottom, especially when crowds have become to expect it. Comedy is now frequently about shock value, and pushing the envelope. Very few people have the same type of comedy routine Ellen has. She IS a breath of fresh air, comedy wise.

Quite a few people have "come around" to the opinion that we gays are not the scum of the earth. At one time Obama kept his distance from outright acceptance, and in looking back, I believe it was primarily a political stance, and not his personal one. That is just as bad.

But people do grow. I do believe that Mr. Hart is now on our side. And Mr. Goins does NOT speak for this gay.

Ellen has known Mr. Hart for many years and knows him a lot better than Mr. Goins. I trust her judgement.

Me thinks Mr. Goins is more interested in getting publicity for himself. His "opinion" piece smacks of nothing more than the tweet/instagram/facebook "gotcha" pithy retort.

I wonder how he would feel if others decided that he was nothing more than a "click-bait whore", willing to shit on someone else's honest growth in lgbtq acceptance, to further his own personal career...

And the remark by another poster that money changes everything, is so off the mark that it doesn't deserve addressing. It is just another example of broad brush painting that is misguided.

I am a gay boomer. I also grew up in the south, and believe me, while growing up I used a lot of words that I accepted as the norm, until I left home, and GREW into an adult that had finally been exposed to others.

People frequently say that all those boomer-hippies sold out once they became successful and managed to acquire a few assets. Well, some of us did, but a LOT of us are still of the mind of the 60's, when we had so much hope for changing the world. Sadly, we failed.

As people's careers become more successful, they usually tend to make more money. As they make more money they tend to be exposed to a lot more people and situations that they may not have encountered before. More than not, in larger urban areas. And although it is a cliche, since this gay does NOT have a lot of money, a lot of gays do. Generally speaking (I know there are always exceptions...) the higher people's incomes, the more accepting of lgbtqs they are, because they are dealing with them everyday. And once they start meeting us and getting to know us, their attitudes change.

I believe that Mr. Hart has faced that life change. I heartily accept him as an ally.

He also remarked that there was a point when he saw that the criticism of him on social media was refusing to address the fact that he had ALREADY been forced to apologize for those same remarks. It had turned into an attempt to destroy his career.

That is cyber-bullying.

Mr. Goins is nothing more than a cyber-bully, who apparently has quite a few supporters here on DU.

So. Sad.
