(10,113 posts)Democrats want to tax you at 70%. And every inside the D.C. bubble media pundit will ask Democrats to defend a "70% tax rate" PERIOD. Another talking point which i am surprised i have not yet seen is class warfare. Well, that war has been fought for decades and we all know who has won.

(1,376 posts)Remind them that Ike's top bracket was 91 percent, and he was elected and re-elected with 55 percent and 57 percent of the vote, respectively.

(1,376 posts)The top bracket was 91 percent, meaning if you fell into that bracket, you paid 91 percent on the percentage of your income that was above that in the next lower bracket - not that you paid 91 percent on ALL of what you made.
Seriously.

(20,254 posts)Only the very highest income earners would pay that much and only on the top part of their income, after deductions. I imagine AOCs plan would be similar.

(50,594 posts)Or, as the GOP has termed them while trying to get rid of the ones you rely on, "loopholes." In the old days the Internal Revenue Code was pretty much a build-your-own-tax-cut plan that required you to spend money to get your tax cut.
The example I've used before: if you want to use money to convince your kid to study harder, would you tell him "I will give you $25 for each report card you bring home that's got all straight As on it" or "here's $100, get straight As but if you don't, that's okay too"? The GOP has been using the second one since the Reagan administration and by damn, they can't believe their kid doesn't bring home straight As...or people start hiring workers they don't need, or companies start replacing equipment that still sorta works.

(31,261 posts)I do favor a flat tax of 40% on any net pay or gross profit over $10 million, UNLESS, the individual business owner or company agree to allocate say 20% of the money to investments in equipment and workers and supplies, no buying yatchs or buying back stock.

(26,045 posts)...Ike would have never become President. Hed have been defeated for the 1952 Republican nomination by a Fox-backed Joe McCarthy, and probably tarred as an accomplice of Stalin in WWII.

(1,376 posts)Fair ... but interestingly enough, the Fairness Doctrine was only about three years old, and the prior standard, Mayflower, was actually even more restrictive - broadcasters could not editorialize, period.
The 1940s and 1950s were not eras I'd want to live in, but in their favor, there was a pretty broad understanding of the power of both propaganda and responsible honest journalism, for obvious reasons.

(8,755 posts)The 70% number comes directly from Reagan's economic policy. This is not a new thing. It also only affects annual income over $10 million, meaning the first $10 million would be taxed at current rates.

(19,569 posts)She's not hurting us overall too much. None of the junior congresspeople are, no matter what you see on the news. They're not our Tea Party, or our demise. That's blather created for ratings. Ignore it unless she attacks the party itself. Which so far it seems she's too smart to do. I suspect she has all the makings of a true politician and I'm willing to wait and see.
Let her be and let her be her. I don't really understand her level of national celebrity, but that's over and done and between her and the media now. She's working a groove to try and escalate herself. I get that. Hell, I'd do the same in her shoes.
I'm pro leave her be and let her find her own balance. Either she will, or she won't. She has a lot of eyes and stress on her now, but she's a first year junior Congressperson. She's a rookie. Give her some space and a year or so to find her feet before we judge her.
Hell, she's not even ours to judge. She belongs to her district and they're the people she's supposed to be representing after all.

(386 posts)They don't understand what AOC and we do about how income tax brackets work, and that even very wealthy people's lower levels of income are taxed at lower rates. That the higher rates talked about would apply to income over $x, some very high number, and to that income ONLY.
Which makes it easy for Repubs like this guy to launch the figure into their meme-o-sphere as their latest scary supposed outrage-of-the-week.
Even if one does leave the word "marginal" in the term -- which the fearmonger party never does -- I don't think most people grasp what's being said. A "60% marginal income tax rate" still scares even people whose own rate would never go beyond the 20s.
The language used in discussing personal income taxation isn't conducive to making this important distinction clear to the listener.
I don't know what it is, but we need better ways of expressing what's being talked about. Terminology that isn't so easy to mis-represent and mis-understand.

(280 posts)Bartcop would have loved her, finally a Democrat who fights back and spanks the Republican asshats. She is another example of the wonderful people that have called the Bronx their home like Sonya Sotomayor and Fiorello LaGuardia.
I went to high school in Parkchester near her home , I am proud to have being from the Bronx in common with such a bright strong person as AOC. I wish her great success.
