Australians care if politicians tell lies, but people in the US don't

The US may have entered a “post-truth” era, but Australia has not. Researchers who asked people in the US their views on politicians who frequently bend the truth found that fact-checking had little impact, whereas for Australians it did change their political opinions.

... when the team did a follow-up study in the US, the size of the effect was ten times smaller. “We have a lot of information now suggesting American voters don’t really care about facts, in the sense that if you tell them a politician is dishonest it doesn’t really seem to matter,” says Lewandowsky.

In the Australian study, 450 people did an online test ... The feelings and voting intentions of those shown mostly falsehoods changed significantly, while those of people shown an equal mix of truth and falsehoods did not. Surprisingly, fact checking was just as effective whatever people’s initial view of the politician making the statement.
...
The team did not investigate the reasons for this difference, but they speculate that it has to do with the far more polarised nature of political culture in the US.

In Australia, voting is compulsory and there is a preferential voting system. “There are buffers against extremism in the Australian system that don’t exist in the US,” says Lewandowsky.

There were plenty of discussions on why there have been so many Prime Ministers. The Aussies want honest government. They know Bull Shit when they hear it.

Nor were the Aussies I spoke with kind about Donald Trump. They were crude than the Congresswoman from Michigan was, and she was being KIND.

Just bc we can't stop the liars or the folks broadcasting the liars, doesn't mean we don't care.

Our media constantly ignores and looks past our lying politicians.

Years of equating minor events (like a dem calling drumpf a motherfucker) to major rethug transgressions has left the electorate not uncaring about lies, but simply believing honest politicians don’t exist.

9. I would ask to see the methodology used

The articles says that 450 Australians were surveyed, a pretty small sample size, but mentions nothing about the methodology used in the U.S. poll.

I think it still does matter to most non-conservative voters in the U.S. I think that conservatives are so used to being lied to that they've come to expect it (the ones that actually have functioning brain cells).

Even with the relatively small sample size, a factor of ten is noteworthy, if the research design is otherwise robust.

Conservatives are used to doing what their authoritarian bosses tell them to do and believe, so critical thinking abut veracity isn’t a priority. Unquestioning.

13. A factor of ten is convincing unless they were really screwing up the poll somehow

But in general for example, as a Dem voter, Bill Clinton lying about his affair did bother me and reaffirmed many of the impressions I had of him. Not that that would have made me vote for a Republican opponent, but it is what it is. I've long long since moved beyond the shake lots of hands and lie like a dog type of politician.
