Send your thoughts to Mitch Albom

In today’s edition of the Detroit Free Press, renowned author Mitch Albom penned a screed that bothered me greatly. I tapped out an email to him asking if “Motherfucker” is the line he drew. I urge those that find exception to this article to do the same. I asked him why that bothered him enough to write a column about it and why not other more pressing problems. We need to hold our media personalities feet to the fire.

Here’s the link

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/mitch-albom/2019/01/06/rashida-tlaibs-curses-donald-trump-mitch-albom/2490413002/

Here is his email address
malbom@freepress.com

Some excerpts from the article.

Mitch Albom: Rashida Tlaib's profanity starts year on a low note

I made a New Year’s resolution to stay away from angry politics. It took less than a week to blow it.

The dynamite to my best-laid plans came off the lips of newly minted Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who, shortly after being sworn in last week — before she took a single vote or created a single piece of legislation — announced at a very public event her intent regarding the President:

"We're going to impeach the motherf***er.”

So long, New Year’s.

*********

Which is why I feel compelled to write about Tlaib's choice of words, because it’s a new low in a cesspool of human relations we call politics, and to not acknowledge that is to indirectly condone it, especially since Tlaib is from our backyard, Detroit, and more especially since she defended her comments by saying that’s how people in our city speak.

**********
Tlaib, who at 42 is not a kid, should know better. I’d like to think she’d set a better example for her own children, aged 7 and 13, but that’s not my business; the example she sets for our children is. They will hear and study the things she says. Her election was notable. As a woman in a largely men’s field, and a Muslim in an overwhelmingly non-Muslim body of government, she was representing change.

************
This is what I sent him today in an email

Mr. Albom,

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw?

A word, one single word. A word uttered in a manner that was not overtly angry but in a way that unleashed the passion about the destruction of America bottled up for at least two years. A passion that led a Muslim woman to be of high service to our country even though those same descriptors may lead to religious and misogynistic retorts against her. Putting service of country before personal harm is a courageous virtue that should be applauded by the citizens of our country.

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw when the current president calls your very own profession, “The enemy of the people”? Where was your op-ed on that? That single sentence should be scarier to you than a profanity. That sentence disparages your entire career, your lifeblood.

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw when he brought paper towels to throw to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico when what they needed was calm reassuring and loads of government aid instead they suffered and died.

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw when he instituted some of the worst immigration policies this country has seen for quite a while. Separating small children from their parents, holding them in cages with no end of their captivity in sight does not rate an article from you pointing that out to your readers?

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw when the president of our country has mocking nicknames not only for his opponents but for world leaders some our allies some our enemies? That action alone could cause worldwide implications that would be far worse in our lives that an utterance of a profanity. Why was there no outrage from you a member of the press, a press that has been way too silent on the verbal explosions of the man elected to protect our way of life?

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw when it is becoming increasingly apparent that a foreign government that this country is at odds with aided in a great manner to get this president elected? Where is your patriotic writing on that subject?

“Motherfucker” is the line you draw when this country’s highest elected leader shuts down the government for an unspecified time? This action is hurting middle class citizens not only in the government but those that depend on its generosity to be able to live. This action also puts our country in danger one example is the airlines that need government funds to safely keep airplanes in the sky. The Air Line Pilots Association sent the president a letter asking in no uncertain terms to stop this shutdown. Where is your story on that?

I could go on but I hope you’re getting the underlying theme of this rant.
“Motherfucker” is a small word that would have dried up and blown away like autumn leaves compared to the hard hitting subjects you could/should have been discussing in your tomes.

But “Motherfucker” is the line you drew, not worthy of your talents.
Petty isn’t it?

Nothing more. These fuckers have no actual skin in the game, or at least FEEL like they have enough skin to be burned by foul language from "their side". Fuck Mitch Albom. I grew up with him and have read several of his books (thanks, Dad!). Dude's a good sports writer, but flunks heavily on the empathy for actual struggling humans part. He's really more of a conservative that gets upset when it affects HIM and not some intellectual exercise he can write about. Very disappointing.

My wife used to have his books, we even went to a book signing of his, where he was a jerk to me, but i shook it off. But the day THIS happened (see link below), my wife threw his books in the trash and we took a picture of them in the trash and sent to it him.

http://www.fox2detroit.com/news/local-news/mitch-alboms-comments-on-jameis-winston-rape-accuser-draws-fire

Mitch Albom has made a living speaking his mind but one recent comment may cost him. While appearing on the ESPN's The Sports Reporters, a show seen around the country the topic revolved around a $950,000 settlement regarding Jameis Winston and the woman who he allegedly raped when he was a quarterback at Florida State University.

"I'd feel a lot happier about this, if the woman took that money and gave it to charity and said, 'That's not what this was about.' I am always suspect when people end up saying, 'Well, I'm going to take it.'"

The backlash came quickly. People commenting online against Albom's outspoken statements. The reaction locally is equally as strong.

"In his own way he's calling her a liar," said Rychael Walton, Angel House co-founder.

Or listen to broadcasters when the games are on. They get paid to say or write what people sitting in a bar would say. Usually not much insight but I do admit they got a great gig.

When I worked at a university he was paid a lot of money to come speak. He flies around in a private jet, and acted like an entitled jerk whie he was there. I worked with someone who also worked at the Free Press and she said he was an ahole. So of course he is the one to be telling others how to act.

Now the debate changes to "did so and so cross the line by saying motherfucker" when it should be: should we hold the president accountable for laundering money for russian gangsters in exchange for help in the election and loans.
