I vowed I was going to stop writing comments in my local paper some time ago, since the only ones who seem to comment any more are addle brained MAGATs.
Well, I caved, and got into it with this guy who is 100% in favor of building The Wall.
I kept asking him why should we give Trump one thin dime of taxpayer money when Trump keeps insisting that Mexico will pay for it. He kept deflecting into his talking points about illegals and crime, drugs, and coming here looking for free stuff.
Again, I asked why do we have to give Trump one thin dime if Mexico is paying for it.
He finally said, "One step at a time."
Huh? I said, that's one hell of a step! Five billion dollars???
He asked me if I have locks on my doors and if so why do I have them. (wonder if he's been hearing the Fox spews all about how illegals will be roaming our neighborhoods, committing crime, and sleeping in our front yards).
Again, I posed the question of why WE have to pay for this wall ...... Why do we have to hold thousands upon thousands of working people and public programs hostage to Trump's egregiously expensive boondoggle and vanity project.
No response last time I checked.
You just can't reason with these turds!

(2,580 posts)a long list of reasons the wall is ludicrous, my edited version of the top three, use it on the morons:
1. Walls dont work. Illegal immigrants have tunneled underneath and/or erected ramps up and down walls to simply drive over them. People find a way. When East Germany erected its wall, it created a military zone, staffed by booted, machine-gun carrying guards ready to shoot to kill. Yet thousands managed to make it to West Germany anyway. More to the point, do we really want to model ourselves after communist East Germany?
2. Most illegal immigrants are overstayers. They come to the US legally for vacations, business, to study, etc. and then STAY past their visas. By 2012, overstayers accounted for 58% (THE MAJORITY!) of all unauthorized immigrants. And it's increasingly the method of choice, by 2014 66% of illegals were overstayers.
A wall is meaningless here!
3. Walls have little impact on drugs being brought in to the US. According to the DEA, almost all drugs come in through legal points of entry, hidden in secret containers and/or among legit goods in tractor-trailers. A wall will have little to no impact on the influx of drugs into our country.

(8,231 posts)yet we are keeping it wide open up north and most of the 'illegals' fly in. Not to mention folks can tunnel under and climb over. They have no argument because each point they make can easily be shot down.

Time for a 10ft wall around Trump Tower... Security of course.

(1,035 posts)This isn't about building a wall, it's building the lie. The first brick in the lie is that Mexico will pay for it. Trump lied. Mexico is not paying for it, directly or indirectly. The second brick in the lie is that this action will do anything for border security. It will not. Just like the Great Wall did not keep out invaders, the Maginot Line did not protect France from invasion and "Wall Street" did not prevent the British from occupying Manhattan (sensing a theme here?) this wall or steel fence or beaded curtain will do nothing for border security. It's a simpleton's response to a complex problem. Trump and the CONservatives have tried to weaponize all of these lies for political purposes.

(32,102 posts)They're the ones who commit 99.9% if the crime in this country. It's a stupid analogy, anyway. All one has to do is ask these clowns if they only have locks on the doors on one side of their house, because that's essentially what Trump's stupid-ass wall is. The biggest group of "illegals" are actually Canadians (and others) who overstayed their visas. In reality, that idiotic analogy amounts to putting locks on your front door to protect yourself from the people across the street, while you invite the people behind you through your lock-free back door for dinner, and have no problem with the fact that they're still in your home a week later.

(13,878 posts)The first job I had resulted in me moving into a town of 400 people, since it was midway between where I was going to work and where my wife drove for her job.
The first person I talked to was the electric company guy who came to turn on the power in the house we were renting. A good general question to ask to get some idea of what kind of community this was: "Do people here lock their doors during the day?"
He said, "Oh yeah, you better. Some of the old folks will just wander in and sit down and you won't be able to get rid of them for hours."
I didn't have too much concern after that.

(37,044 posts)One of Donald's major foreign policy points is that other countries are not paying their way and America is paying too much.
This wall is Mexico's obligation according to Trump.
Why does he want to saddle the American taxpayer for his wall that is Mexico's obligation?

There's a GoFundMe account for TrumpWall so he can bypass all the Libtards and buy the wall himself. And--here's the really good news--get a receipt, send it to:

(37,044 posts)How to Build Trumps Wall - Privatize It
Republicans have often found a way to tax people surreptitiously by privatizing many public works projects to corporations rather than have govt pay for it. A fee/toll is a tax under another name.
The corporations/investors are granted a multi-year license with a guaranteed profit.
This could also be done with Trumps Wall with Mexico.
Corporations/investors front the money to build it and they will be paid by Mexico.
It gives republicans a chance to save the govt money by investing in it and show their confidence in Trumps word that Mexico will pay for it .
No govt backed bonds.
No cost to the govt,,, no need for taxes,,, profit for the patriotic investors who believe in Trump.
Win win all around.
Even Trump can show his patriotism and shrewd business savvy by investing in it.
