(38,458 posts)His Secretary of Transportation in 1977, Brock Adams, with Carter's approval, mandated seatbelts in all cars by 1984. Since the early 80s, the number of traffic deaths in the U.S. have declined drastically because of the seat belts, air bags, and many other safety devises on cars. Some companies started putting in seatbelts before the mandated date. Also, there was a recession in the early 80s which reduced driving...
BUT....in 2015, there were about 35,000 traffic deaths in the U.S. with a population of 330,000,000
..........in 1979 before the law went into being, there were 51,000 traffic deaths,- pop of .200,000,000. (aprox)
So...with 50 percent more people we have 50 percent less death due to safety devises like seat belts, air bags, crumple zones..etc.. Carter mandated that this be done, with years ahead of time to make sure the auto companies could comply. It was the first of many orders like this.. Brilliant..If you know someone who's life was saved by the air bags, seatbelts or any the other safety devises..give credit to President Carter.
