An Arkansas sheriffs deputy was fired after shooting a barking chihuahua in the head Friday, an incident officials labeled disheartening.
Faulkner County Sheriff Tim Ryals said in a statement Saturday that deputy Keenan Wallace had been terminated after it was determined there were numerous opportunities to de-escalate the incident.
Cellphone video of the encounter shows Wallace opening fire on the dog named Reeses within feet of its owner, Doug Canady. Police say the incident began following a call for service for an aggressive dog at Canadys home.
Canady told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that police were called by a woman standing in the road in front of his home, who pointed a gun toward his property. When Canady told the woman to put the gun away, she complied but threatened to call authorities, he said.

(51,374 posts)I am reading that a woman was in front of the owner's home that had the dog and complaining about the ruckus? Why the hell was she there?
If the former law person was concerned about the dog he should had instructed the man to either put the dog in the house. The man then could had gone into the house and then talked to the former law person with the door between them.
It would seem that there could be a event situation built into a program that law enforcement could use as a guide as to how to handle a situation.
