(16,547 posts)To my point, I think it should have been Pelosi solo. She gets it by ranking since speaker of the house is a bigger deal than senate minority leader. There was no great need for chuck to be there.

(102,525 posts)The former certainly has SOME skills and might even be a prodigy, but most of us would like to ensure they've achieved the EXPERIENCE to handle the surgery that comes with training and time.
AOC might be a prodigy--time will tell. But, she is not the Speaker of the House, nor has she demonstrated the skills and results necessary YET to be eligible for a LEADERSHIP position. I hope that she will.

(1,428 posts)Democratic policies would be on everyone's mind the very next day. The cable news channels would cover it for weeks. The most exciting fresh face in politics would be front and center. It would motivate young voters like nothing else. It would be a master stroke of political marketing and genius.
So of course it would not even be considered. No, let's just send out Pelosi and Schumer. Whatever they say will be lucky to last one news cycle. And not even that if Trump happens to send a misspelled tweet over something he saw on Fox.

(62,444 posts)That is literally what she was elected to do, and with AOCs vote.
AOC was elected by one district in New York, and does not represent the majority of the House as its speaker.

(30,824 posts)My impressions of her so far:
She's brand new. She looks interesting and she's bold. She may be a little ahead of herself, and possibly a but full of herself?
Her tax proposal is not bad, although there are pros and cons about putting it forward at this time, but I'd feel a lot more comfortable if she was working with other representatives who already know the ropes. It leaves me to wonder if she is looking for a fast track to political stardom.

(7,681 posts)You mean that in a positive way. There was nothing negative implied at all.
Clearly anyone reading between the lines and picking up any insult or innuendo is totally off base.
We'll just totally disregard the fact you've been bashing her all up and down the board since she appeared on the scene.
It's completely irrelevant!
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)Please be specific and quote something I actually wrote that qualifies as a "bashing" - which, given your belief that I've been "bashing her all up and down the board since she appeared on the scene," shouldn't be too difficult for you to do.
It's the same three or four joining in on every post with her name in it. So obvious, seems they are protected by some click. No bashing democrats doesn't apply to AOC.
It is the old we are better than that crowd. Learn from your fucking elders, bullshit. I'm 69 and I love this new courage in our young representatives.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)You've produced no examples of me "bashing" Ocasio-Cortez - either "all up and down the board" or otherwise.
Because I've done nothing of the kind.
melman
(7,681 posts)But I'm not playing this game. Sorry.
tonedevil
(3,022 posts)if very obvious. I see no reason to expect that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez will not do well in the areas you highlighted only time will tell of course. It would certainly be premature to judge her abilities to form alliances or craft legislation in the Congress at this point, but she has charisma and without that no politician is going to go very far.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)But I haven't seen anyone judge her abilities at this point - but people are cautioning her to develop her obvious natural talents to make sure she lives up to her potential.
While it's a great attribute to have, charisma isn't a requirement for or a guarantee of a successful political career. I've known and worked with politicians who have the charisma of an earthworm, but they've been very successful because they consistently deliver for their constituents. And I've also known and worked with politicians who were brimming with charisma, but being charismatic turned out to be their only turned out to be their only talent and didn't do the hard, unsexy work required and they didn't last very long.
tonedevil
(3,022 posts)but I don't know of any politicians above say a city council or school board who could be described as both successful and without charisma.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)Most people outside of their districts don't know who they are ... but their constituents know them well and love them because they've worked hard for them.
