Moments ago on the Senate floor, Ben Cardin asked for unanimous consent from all senators to pass one of the House-approved bills to reopen the government.

Mitch McConnell objected, calling the House-passed bills "an absolutely pointless show vote." Via ABC

So, you were saying about an absolutely pointless show vote, Mr. Majority Leader?

The Senate doesn't have a good mechanism like the House does, where (with much effort) one can put forth a discharge petition to force consideration of a bill.

The main things that can easily be discharged from committee are "non-controversial" legislation that usually get unanimous consent (proclamations, post office namings, etc)... although in the past, Senators HAVE snuck important things in for passage "by unanimous consent" if no one bothered to read the calendar for the day and no one else was there in the chamber to object when the Senator introduced the measure.

has ultimate veto power. He alone decides what legislation is voted on.

I would not think this was right under a Democrat either.

Of course Cardin is Senator from MD, which has a lot at stake.

A clip of Turtle's response should be aired over and over and over and over and over - especially the part where he says "there's a lot of important business the Senate could be tackling" - essentially dismissing a closed federal government as being unimportant.
