Well, our first presidential primary straw poll of the 2020 cycle began with a bang! Nearly 35,000 of you voted! The results:
1/8
ELIZABETH WARREN.............22%
BETO OROURKE...................15%
KAMALA HARRIS...................14%
JOE BIDEN...........................14%
BERNIE SANDERS.................11%
UNSURE..............................9%
OTHER................................9%
CORY BOOKER.....................3%
JULIAN CASTRO...................1%
KRISTEN GILLIBRAND...........1%
With over two dozen candidates talking about running (no exaggeration), I will replace the bottom-two-performing candidates with two new candidates. Yes, that means that in any given week, unless you support one of those top performers, there are good odds that your favorite candidate may not be on here. Given that 17-18 other candidates are all sharing that 9 percent other, theyre just not currently relevant. And no, Im not going to pretend they are, until they are legitimate players.

In fact, there are few candidates who are going to break into that top five. The Iowa-New Hampshire duopoly is over. The idea that some unknown candidate will catapult into contention after spending a year talking to white rural diners is laughable. This is the social media age, and the first primary is taking place RIGHT NOWwho can build a mass movement and raise millions this year? Because, while too many candidates think the Iowa rules still apply, the reality is that California will be voting at the same time as the Iowa caucuses (mail-in ballots drop the same day), and Iowas 30 or so delegates, allocated proportionately, will matter little compared to the hundreds of delegates California will be awarding to each of the top vote-getters.
Throw in primaries in huge states like Texas, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Virginia, and its clear that the playing field is too big and too expensive, in a media landscape that is too fragmented, to hope to build any real organization out of Iowa. If you dont have the millions to compete in those early non-Iowa and non-New Hampshire states, then youre already toast.
And thats a good thing. Modern presidencies arent won in rural diners. Theyre won by those who best manage their mediasocial, partisan, and traditional. And that requires building a movement of millions of people, everywhere, irrespective of geography.
