Young Woman Who Fled Saudi Arabia Arrives In Canada As Refugee

https://www.npr.org/2019/01/13/684961872/young-woman-who-fled-saudi-arabia-arrives-in-canada-as-refugee

The 18-year-old Saudi woman who captured international attention as she resisted deportation from a Bangkok hotel room arrived in Canada on Saturday, in the final leg of a long journey to secure legal refuge.

Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland welcomed Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun in the Toronto Pearson International Airport, putting her arm around the smiling young woman, who had donned a Canada zip-up.

"Canada was glad we were able to act quickly and to offer refuge to a refugee at the request of UNHCR," Freeland told reporters, referring to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. "And to offer refuge to a person whose life was in danger."

Canada granted asylum status to Alqunun on Friday. She flew to Toronto via Seoul, South Korea, according to Surachate Hakparn, Thailand's immigration police chief.

1. I'm so glad she's safe now

2. I'm fucking furious that Canada stepped up and we didn't

3. Taking in people who had nowhere else to go has been what made America great throughout history

4. If we tell people like her to go somewhere else, we will pay the price surprisingly quickly.

I hope her family does not try to stalk her over there. I fear for this poor girl's life.

On of the very attractive young ladies was very flamboyant and had a nice figure and was not hiding it. Very well endowed with no bra and low cut top. Drinking like a fish.

Her advisor told me she was from SA and lived in fear of having to return and live a life she detested. Which is why she stayed drunk.

Which is why I often argue for laws in Europe against covering women even though they are not popular on DU. I know in this country we can’t, and never should have laws against it. And support allowing women in Congress to wear what they want. Cause a Congress member has a real choice. But most of these women don’t.

I often think of that young lady.

We should embargo SA. Not Cuba.

There is a big difference between religious headgear and full body covering. We can and should have laws against full body covering.

In this country I think laws against full covering would be ok. But may not be constitutional.

At the end of the day how do you separate what a person truly wants when they are raised in a totally patriarchal community?

We have no problem keeping Mormons from having multiple wives and fucking 14 year olds. They go to jail. As we have recently seen. But I am thinking many of those women were cool with it cause...god.

I hate all religion because it always marginalizes women and all nonbelievers. But most Americans disagree.

I refuse to see minority religions treated differently.
