How long are they willing to shut down our government?
Tomorrow, both sides will return to Washington. It is doubtful that anything will get done on a Monday. They will both be anticipating what the other side might do - which will cave first ? Tuesday will be the earliest that they can begin to correct this dastardly deed, in my opinion.
Republicans have incorporated a new word into their vocabulary in the last three or so days. They now refer to Trump's wall as a "barrier". Instead of a fence or a wall, we will now build a barrier.
Trump should order Mitch to open up the House bill for a vote, but, but tell the media that Mitch did it on his own. He may even feign anger? Most likely, it will pass the Senate with a veto-proof majorty. Mitch could save Donald's ass, all the while he is saving face.
This could get the Republicans off the hook, at least for the present time.
It's hard to envision another way out of this mess with any honor intact?

(18,647 posts)that the Democrats will have to give in to prevent serious damage to the country.
He, of course, cares nothing about damage to the country.
Once they do he will be the big winner and will have shown that he is stronger than they are.
(This assumes he doesn't go for the emergency declaration which would open up a whole new can of worms.)
The one hitch in his plan is the Republican Senate. McConnell in particular.
Mitch has the ability to end the shut down but he knows if he does he will have made Trump a LOSER which won't be taken lightly.
Also by allowing Democrats to win the first showdown may cripple Trump and the Republicans for the rest of the term.
He probably also fears being targeted by Trump as an enemy and fears losing his reelection if Trump turns on him.
So his calculus is to lay low and hope that things go the way Trump expects, the Democrats finally giving in because the shutdown is so horrific for the country.
The shutdown will damage support for Republicans but at least he won't have Trump turn on him which would be personally worse.
