Gillibrand hires 3 senior staffers ahead of Iowa visit

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's political operation has hired three senior staffers ahead of an expected presidential campaign launch.

It's the latest sign of movement toward a 2020 campaign from the New York Democrat, who is also planning a trip to Iowa next weekend. Gillibrand has kept a close-knit circle of staff around her in the Senate, and her longtime chief of staff, Jess Fassler, has been tapped to serve as her presidential campaign manager.

The expansion of Gillibrand’s team to include wider roster of veteran Democratic operatives is the strongest signal yet that a presidential announcement is imminent.

The new hires include Dan McNally, Gillibrand’s campaign director; Meredith Kelly, the communications director; and Emmy Bengtson, the deputy communications director, who will lead Gillibrand’s digital operation, according to a person familiar with their hiring.

is having worked on a campaign on your resume--any campaign--perceived to propel you on to bigger and better things?

I'm guessing this may be the case, because I really don't see her campaign going anywhere (given that the big Democratic ideology-driven donors are giving her a hard pass), though likely a bit further than Tulsi's.

"winning" is obviously the top outcome, but beating the expectations game can also be beneficial.

Warren, Harris, Gillibrand, Booker, maybe Sanders, maybe Klobuchar, maybe Brown...Remember when Governors ran for President? Same for the Pubs; Cruz, Rubio, Sasse...Proximity to money I guess.

Have the others announced? I hope they do. We need some DC outsiders in the mix.

I don’t see her being able to break out of the pack against more dynamic candidates like Warren or Harris or O’Rourke. She’s to blah.

On the other hand, she did just win re-election with a huge margin.

Outside of the blogosphere, I don't think the average voter remembers that this was an issue.

Solid progressive and great spokesperson for our party. As I've said before, she will be right near the top of my list. We have some great names being thrown about. Looks like we are going to have a lot of overlap.
