I have a suggestion:

The Republicans and the Democrats in the US Senate should hold a conference amongst themselves.

They should not include the Executive Branch.

Their fake "crisis" has turned into a real crisis. People are losing their jobs. It's time to end this disastrous policy of Donald Trump.

They should vote on whether or not to open the government. Full stop.

Then, they should debate about how much should be spent on "border security". How many "barriers" do we need?

There is no need to shut down the rest of the government just because they cannot agree on how much to spend on a border "barrier". It's time for them to come to their senses and open the government. If The trump vetoes it, then over-ride his veto. That is the only way we are going to get out of this mess.

It's time to talk to each other.

McConnell is the only one with the power to open the debate. He can do it at any time. All requests on this should be sent to him.

That is why I made the post.

Do they want to open the government or they wish to see it get much worse?

This IS GOP"S last stand.

1. If and when he allows any house appropriations bills to HAVE a vote, they will pass easily in the Senate and then Trump will veto, so the anchor goes around the House and Senate GOP to vote on a veto OVERRIDED which takes 2/3rds to do.

2. 2/3rds = magic number of the Senate to find impeachment conviction, a number McConnel does not want to see with an override vote.

IF GOP politicians fall out of step, trumps base support is enough to see many, if not most of the defectors LOSE a primary challenge. Of course the replacements would be SO BATSHIT crazy that all sorts of NEW democratic pickups would be in play in 2020 (and 2022).

we are witnessing the full destruction of the Republican party in realtime.

We are not even talking Mueller probe, House investigations and hearings or FBI tying trump to Putin

throw that in too, what a mess and PUTIN COULD NOT BE HAPPIER

uprising of GOP Senators, this shutdown will remain in play. Its trump's only play he has left to distract from the tidal wave of corruption investigations heading his way.

McConnel is doing it as a matter of political survival....

trump's disapproval rating among Republicans goes low enough. I think that's the number they're watching.

It would be nice if they had some compassion for this country rather than their own political well being.

Mitch also knows that the thinking in the White House is that if Trump doesn't get this WIN his chances for re-election drop dramatically. Yes Mitch and others are scared witless about the primaries too.

5. End the shutdown and agree to take up comprehensive immigration reform in short order.

Senate Republicans would be interested in this as they have seen that many Democrats will accept new wall construction when combined with other things we want. I'm just not sure these types of deals are workable at this point in time. The trust level between the members of congress has to be at a long time low. It's a conversation worth having and I think you are right, it needs to completely exclude the executive branch. It has to be about the senate moving the budget forward in big numbers. We are currently at a standoff.

Some Democrats will have to show that they are willing to vote differently from their Leaders also.
