Do you think they are waiting for 12 (13?) Republican senators to cave and provide a veto proof vote on the "open the government" bills? If not, then what? Trump won't be motivated by citizens' pain.

(3,344 posts)IMHO, sooner or later Mitch will tell the President that time is up and they better come up with some sort of fig leaf to save face.

(23,018 posts)In the GOP. There are Republicans who have already broken with the leadership. That was before the polls came out that said they are losing on the issue. I suspect there will be more defectors this week. McConnell has already signaled to Trump that there is nothing he can do and to expect a bill on his desk to sign or veto.

(100,144 posts)He started this *INTENTIONALLY* with the Dems taking the house so he has someone to scapegoat. Honestly I don't see any way out of this unless he's either dead from a massive heart attack or in jail. I honestly see the latter happening before the former.

(82,849 posts)But I hope for their sake and ours that compromising with Trump on his stubborn insistence of lighting $5 billion on fire isn't in the mix. Back down on this, and that's all Trump will remember and it's all he has to do going forward is take the country hostage. If he gets any kind of payoff at all for terrorizing the country like this, it will become his go-to move to "win" on every other issue.
The House must refuse to give in, and public pressure brought to bear on the Senate.

(10,252 posts)In this case (unfortunately), it will be people hurting with no regular income. Soybean farmers, whose crops are rotting in the field. Manufacturers dependent on steel and aluminum, etc. Think about that. There are 22 Republican senators up for re-election in 2020. They must be getting an ear full from constituents. Trump doesn't give a shit. He thinks that he is being strong and heroic. He will not budge unless he gets his way. It will take a veto proof bill to end this. So enough Republican senators must be convinced that it's in their best interest to cross Trump. We have to be patient, while a critical mass of public disapproval builds to a climax.
None of us wants to wait that long, but I think that is swhat it swill take.

(24,294 posts)members to come to their senses, realize Trump is a drag on their careers and force a vote that overrides Trump's veto.
Their natural instinct is that their fellow legislators will step up and legislate.
I'm not sure they are correct because of the Quisling's the Modern GOP has become.

(42,831 posts)Remember, the 1995 government shutdown started with a presidential veto.

(42,831 posts)A veto proof vote is 2/3.
There are 47 Democrats (including independents); so 20 republicans would have to jump ship and join the Democrats in supporting an override. And in the House, 2/3 of 434 (the current number of House members) is 290. There are 235 Democrats. So 55 Republicans would have to join the Democrats in voting to override.
