Paul Kane: McConnells absence is completely misunderstood. Many think that there is no deal because he is on the sideline, but in fact its the opposite: He is on the sidelines because there is no deal to be had, at least not yet.
There is a fundamental divide that cannot be bridged by a mathematical slight of hand the way McConnell helped resolve other impasses move a little money from this account into that one, cut taxes from these workers but increase them on a few others. No, this is fundamental: Trump wants a border wall, Pelosi is morally opposed to that. Theres no old-school-appropriator resolution.
Politico: A handful of Senate Republicans are expressing frustration with their partys handling of the ongoing government shutdown. But Mitch McConnell is a long way from facing any sort of rebellion.

(9,116 posts)He is where he is because it is exactly where he believes it advantageous for him to be. There's no deal because he believes dealing is not advantageous to him personally or the GOP broadly. There will continue to be no deal until such a point that it becomes politically advantageous for him to do so.

(5,505 posts)He understands shutting down the government after the House flipped was bad optics. It's not what people voted for.
But there is nothing he can do about it. He is faced with a president that doesn't really care about the country or the people in it. He cares only about himself. And since he is getting love from the crazy right, he will continue this.
My guess is that if they tried to give him $5 billion today, he'd come back and say the price was $10 billion now.
We are dealing with pure lunacy. He won't be happy unless the Democrats beg him to open the government. I think we are in the beginning of a major crisis (worse than the on-going 2 year crisis).

(5,505 posts)Or even wants to. The more I think about it, the more I think that McConnell might be on board with this approach. They have two years to burn everything down.

(32,917 posts)... NOT to shutdown the government before Christmas.
It was McConnell and several other GOP leaders that all tried to make Cheeto listen. But he wouldn't listen and he went ahead and shut it down, because nobody can tell him what to do. So now McConnell has no intention of saving Cheeto's butt, at least not yet. Whenever he changes his mind, I guess we'll all know. Maybe we need a few more protest parades?
