Beto's excellent adventure drips with white male privilege - CNN

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/17/politics/beto-orourke-funk-drive-2020/index.html

They are already starting the primary attacks.

O'Rourke, 46, we are told, is "Obama, but white," because of his fundraising prowess -- he raised nearly $80 million in his loss to Sen. Ted Cruz. He skateboards! He listens! He connects on the internet!

And Jack Kerouac-style, he roams around, jobless (does he not need a job?) to find himself and figure out if he wants to lead the free world. This is a luxury no woman or even minority in politics could ever have.

But O'Rourke, tall, handsome, white and male, has this latitude, to be and do anything. His privilege even allows him to turn a loss to the most despised candidate of the cycle into a launching pad for a White House run.

claiming he's felt great hardship as a white man, or is he talking about the right issues? Beto may not be at the top of my list, but this is an oddball hit-piece that leaves out the very details that would make such a hit substantial. Does it in anyway contradict O'Rourke's packaging or is it simply supposed to seem as if it does? I hate that shit.

I live in the South. The base of our party here is African Americans. I hope they are represented on the ticket.

My heart wants Abrams or Gilliam. But one is a state representative and the other a mayor so do not think Americans will see them as ready for prime time. Which is why I support Harris or Booker.

I wish we had an accomplished African American Governor because Governors have a great history of being elected. Which is why I was so depressed at Abram’s and Gillum’s loses.

He started up and made a company successful and sold it to a larger company. I will check to confirm, but if the info is correct, he is a multi-millionaire.

Checked. Beto is worth between $7 and $9 million dollars on his own. His father-in-law is likely a real billionaire (not a Trump billionaire).

Cause he ran as progressive a campaign as possible there and still lost.

I live in Florida. Was a Graham supporter but of course went 100% in for Gilliam once he won the primary. He was was very progressive. And lost. I think Graham would have won.

No Democratic candidate who ran as left as Beto would have have won.

We must run Democrats who can win in their districts and states. . All of America is not bright blue despite what we read on DU.

That is what a 50 state strategy means.

And raised $70M, more than doubling Cruz. A major advantage.

Also, Cruz isnt the most likeable guy in world.

My contention only is the O'Rourke could have won the race. It was winnable. Toward the end, I started to get an inkling his race wasnt about the Senate and winning wasnt necessarily the goal, especially when he wasnt spending all his funds. Anyway, maybe in the long run, it makes him a better candidate.

No, I dont live there, but I'm there often. I'm in Arkansas, a stones throw from MO and OK...doesnt feel Southern but probably is.

but the fact he is white, good looking, and evocative of Kennedy certainly doesn't hurt him and his resume is exceptionally thin to be taken seriously as a Presidential candidate. Both Stacy Abrams and Andrew Gillum took on tough challenges and were closer to overcoming them, but aren't mentioned at all as Presidential candidates.

I understand that the term is supposed to point out the ways in which whites, males, straights, etc., get a “pass” from society in situations where women and minorities would not. But isn’t it obvious that the situation in this story has nothing to do with that? It’s more like, in the author’s eyes, Beto is white and male, therefore tainted, and “privilege” really boils down to “he’s white and male, and therefore inexcusable.” And, if I notice it, don’t you think lots of other white males less progressive than I will see the same thing, and conclude on their part that “‘privilege’ is just a buzzword in the war against ‘real Americans’,” and be driven into the arms of those who practice their very own form of right-wing identity politics?
