How mainstream news gets spun into right wing talking points

Last edited Sat Jan 19, 2019, 05:13 PM - Edit history (1)

I am attending a law enforcement school. We are assigned roommates and live in barrack style dorms. My roommate is a 60 year old veteran who lives in a rural area. We have avoided political topics until this morning. He was looking at his phone (I am pretty sure I overheard it last night blaring some right wing conspiracy website with some crazed white male (Not Alex) screaming something "very bad" was going to happen on January 18th) and he looks up at me and says, "Did you hear them Democrats was going to go on vacation and Trump put a stop to it?" I said, "No, I hadn't heard that." He continues, "Yeah, that Nancy Pelosi," and then he does an imitation of a high pitched woman's voice chattering nonsense words. "was trying to use military planes to go on vacation in Europe."

And that's how right wing lies become fact to the uninformed.

Jesus Christ! I have 3 and half more months at this school.

Because that's what I would have done and then I would have told him visiting the troops in Afghanistan is NOT a vacation and allowing the pilots rest in Belgium is strict policy. Ask him where does he get this stuff. I had a friend who USED to believe all kinds of nonsense until several of us had an "intervention" and hammered him for the kinds of sources he used. He's much more normal now.

If a Congressional Fact Finding Trip was cancelled because of the shutdown should this one have not also been cancelled?

...'tell me more about it' and WOW I would say... 'lets see where they were ALL going to vaca together'...or 'lets just see what those dumbass congress people were gonna do!' ...OH you would say when the truth pops up.. 'darn they were just going to work.. sounds pretty boring to me!' Look over their shoulder feign interest, forge them forward until they have to admit they were full of shit.
