by Colby Hall | Jan 18th, 2019, 7:40 am
CNN analyst Phil Mudd provided an interesting observation on Fridays New Day in which he took the position that President Donald Trump may come to regret nominating Attorney General Bill Barr but in his more signature and colorful style.
Mudd said Barr will be one of the most significant appointees the president has ever made, because Barr, I suspect, is going to crush the administration. The presidents going to say, I never saw that one coming
Mudds comment came during a conversation on CNNs New Day focused on the recent bombshell report that Trump directed his former personal attorney Michael Cohen to lie during Congressional testimony about discussions with Russian authorities over a potential Trump Tower Moscow project. If true, the suborning of perjury would be the clearest case of obstruction of justice and a federal felony.

(13,340 posts)Barr seems like someone who would be willing to trash his legacy to meet political ends. We'll see, I guess.

(4,742 posts)I mean look he isn't a dummy. He saw what happened in the Fall elections. Those results could very possibly go even more blue in 2019 elections and especially 2020 elections. Trump is in a free fall polling. Not much to hitch his wagons to even for political ends.

(11,760 posts)Barr is famous or infamous for his role in the Iran-Contra situation. Granted, he was working with more classical Republicans and proto-neocons but still, he is a shady character and I doubt that he would turn on a Republican president, even Donald Trump.

(116,020 posts)One one hand he has an unsettling history, especially with respect to his encouraging pardons of the people involved in Iran-Contra. On the other hand, he's an institutionalist who worked for the Bushes, who do not like Trump at all. And I recall some columnist commenting that Barr, who is 68 and approaching the end of a long, respected (by a lot of people, if not necessarily by us) career, is unlikely to want to destroy that reputation and go down in history as the guy who buried the Mueller report. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

(2,023 posts)Lindsay Graham met with him BEFORE the hearing. This may be wishful thinking, but with the question he asked about ordering someone to lie, it looks like they may have "set up" Trump here to get Graham out of the bind he is in(with likely blackmail).

(116,020 posts)to meet with an AG nominee before the confirmation hearing, and I think Barr met with several other senators as well, which would be common practice. So nothing can be inferred by the fact that they met. What they discussed is anybody's guess.

(32,917 posts)Serious question - this could be something arranged by Mr. Cheney to torpedo the Trump administration. (?) I wouldn't put it past him to try something underhanded, but I don't know if Barr is the type that would go along with it.
Anybody else know anything? This could get real interesting.
