The fence Democrats voted for is already built.

(6,344 posts)I don't know about what happened 5 years ago, but we know more now and can use technology to secure the border. We have more effective means available to us. The areas trump is talking about are things like the 200 species butterfly sanctuary and Native Tribal lands, rivers and private property. He wants to use eminent domain and take land.
There are many issues.

(6,344 posts)I fear the 200 species butterfly sanctuary may have bulldozed recently in spite of environmentalists working to save it.
If anyone has current info on the butterflies, I would love to know.

(11,941 posts)Actually, in 2006, Congress only set aside $1.4 Billion for the job. The whole budget of the Boarder Patrol was just over $3 Billion. The projected cost, including maintenance, was estimated to be $50 billion over 25 years, according to analyses at the time." The fence was completed in 2015 per the 2016 GAO report. A 2017 GAO report noted: "In addition to the 654 miles of primary fencing, CBP has also deployed additional layers of pedestrian fencing behind the primary border fencing, including 37 miles of secondary fencing and 14 miles of tertiary fencing."
By May 2011, DHS reported completing 649 miles of fencing (99.5% of the 652 miles planned). The fencing included a steel fence (varying in height between 18 and 26 feet) dividing the border towns of Nogales, Arizona in the U.S. and Nogales, Sonora in Mexico.
A 2017 GAO report noted: "According to CBP, from fiscal year 2007 through 2015, it spent approximately $2.3 billion to deploy border fencing along the southwest border, and CBP will need to spend a substantial amount to sustain these investments over their lifetimes. CBP did not provide a current life-cycle costs estimate to maintain pedestrian and vehicle fencing, however, in 2009 CBP estimated that maintaining fencing would cost more than $1 billion over 20 years."
