How many people have they actually taken out of the economy?

It's not just about 800,000 workers, it's about all of their families, dependents and relatives who spend their disposable income to help them.

The actual damage to the economy is probably much larger than just the 800k, maybe even twice that number or more who are not engaged in their usual contributions to our consumer based economy. The economy is often balanced on a knife edge where small percentages of contributors to it can support or derail it. With one stroke, the Repubs have yanked a million or more consumers out of the economy.

Recession? Yeah, could be coming soon to a community near you.

My guess is it's directly affecting four to five times more people than those laid off. LanternWaste Jan 2019 #6

but it's a slow-rolling effect; more will be caught up in it the longer it goes on. Hopefully the workers will get paid, but some re-start situations will likely have ongoing pain down the road, and end up costing the taxpayers more than they would have.

It's clear, intentional harm being done by the executive branch in an attempt to coerce the legislative--abuse of power if there ever was such a thing.

The American people need to, if you'll pardon the phrase, grow a set (of whatever non-gender-offensive symbolic organs of courage and fortitude of your choice).

The news has reported a little bit about small businesses around areas with heavy Federal employment, but it goes deeper and farther than just that.

With the amount of large and small contractors used by the government, my guess is take the furloughed workers and multiply that by four or five.

Heck, I'm as far away as one can get from government circles, yet two close friends and one (albeit idiot) brother-in-law are sitting on their butts because they're all contractors who get about 90% of their work from DC contracts. Adding insult to injury, none of the contractors will get back-pay as the furloughed workers will.
