I think the Gang of Eight, from the Senate and House, should meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff

They should meet as soon as possible.

If there are any doubts about Donald Trump's competence or ability to be the Commander in Chief, then they should discuss those.

It was a terrible lapse in judgement to cancel a secret trip to Afghanistan to study the situation - as Donald Trump did - upon a whim, or from the advice of some illiterate advisor.

Our Congressional leaders should meet and assure themselves and the nation that they have control of the situation, in my opinion.

What is it you believe the Joint Chiefs should do if they believe the president is incompetent or unable to be CinC?

It's not like you are dealing with the most "stable genius" in the world.

Their responsibility is to protect our nation.

Is defined as being subordinate to the civilian government in accordance with the Constitution.

The Constitution provides that the cabinet may remove the president (subject ultimately to Congressional authority) or Congress may do so by impeachment.

For the military to be insubordinate or mutinous does not fit any definition of “protect our nation”.

There is no scenario under which their opinion of the president’s fitness is relevant to anything.

They don’t have the ability to trigger the 25th Amendment. And I’m assuming you aren’t talking about a military takeover.

Not to change the government, but to protect our country. It seems like it would be a prudent thing to do? It would not be wise to feel too secure under our present leadership, in my opinion.

Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
