Sitting down with Nicholas Sandmann - the student at the center of the protest controversy at the Lincoln Memorial. Airs tomorrow on @TODAYshow
The media's turning this smirking kid into an icon or something.

(14,971 posts)I predict the media's gonna turn this shitbag into a martyr and won't ask him any hard questions. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

(4,407 posts)Lose - lose if I ever saw one. Ask tough questions and she will be attacked for being rough on a high school kid. Toss him softballs and she will be seen as supporting privileged white kids.
Just another ratings grab by an inane morning show.

(3,635 posts)that are sympathetic to the populist-right/Trumpers, who see social justice as a distraction to class issues, and hence try hard to downplay "divisive" incidents like this.

(3,479 posts)a Democratic senator...like Al Franken. Perhaps they aren't left-leaning at all?
radius777
(3,635 posts)similar to the alt-right, in that they're culturally conservative and/or sympathetic to whites when it comes to social and cultural issues - while also populist/left leaning on economic issues.
They tend to mythologize the white working class, the American Heartland, etc.
Basically, the PoC/urban working class, that does all the shitwork in this world, is invisible to them and/or an obstacle in creating their rural Heartland fantasy.

(37,748 posts)Hopefully, people will realize the difference between the curiosity (statistical aberration) and the norm (statistical standard), and stop pretending they hold the same amount of weight.
But like you, I'm merely hoping... and I don't see that actually happening if the consistency of that logical flaw maintains itself as it is.

(14,249 posts)And they don't have a bunch of misguided enablers advocating their behalf.
Or perhaps they don't feel the need to go on television try to blame their bad behavior on somebody else.
But your obsession with enabling l these obnoxious little MAGA jerks' racist behavior all over DU is noted - yet not surprising ...

(2,897 posts)It's the reason why Paul Ryan was mythologized as a budget genius. It's the reason why "racial incident" can still be used to describe things right up to putting a noose around a black man's neck. It's the reason why every MSM source was quick to change their opinion as soon as a white man's account of the situation hit the rounds.
White people and white politicians, who are mostly republicans, will always be given the benefit of the doubt by white (mostly male) newsrooms because they often lack the insight, knowledge, or skepticism to challenge someone that looks like their friend, husband, etc. Even on MSNBC, a Chuck Todd interview with a Republican Senator looks like two bros going out for a beer. Thankfully, mostly everyone else (other than Matthews) on that network approaches these issues with skepticism.

Seems llke his or her goal is to make it seem like DUers somehow condone the rhetoric of the BIs. That, and it's a deflection from the Kovington Katholic Kids.
Either way, they're pushing right-wing propoganda on a website for democratic voters, and it fucking sucks.

(21,955 posts)he will be coached to come across as a nice little boy who helps old ladies across the street, and goes to church twice on Sundays, and cleans his room when his mommy tells him to, and he takes out the garbage, and can't wait to go to college.
He will not be asked any hard questions.

(50,334 posts)Smirky is probably much like Kavanaugh was as a youth, ensconced in his private school and allowed - maybe encouraged - to bully those who are not as fortunate. There are people in this society who are allowed to harass, to be obnoxious, to sometimes commit criminal acts and get pats on the hand. They usually aren't black kids. They're usually people like Smirky and Donald Trump.
