so some acquaintances lost 50 Grand of their retirement portfolio last month

not just for US pensioners, or people near pension age.
Or just people watching their share portfolio, or 401(k) value.

Mine peaked end of August 2018, dipped down, with December the worst.

Share markets don't like uncertainty. And there is plenty of that.
