there. "The fans were always among the rudest, most disrespectful, and mean-spirited that I've encountered." He cites bullying of LGBT students and students of color.
Looks like Covington High needs to do a thorough examination of conscience.

I served an Episcopal parish in Northern Kentucky, approximately 15 minutes from Covington Catholic High School. It's a prestigious all-male school with a reputation for strong academics and strong athletics. You can learn that much from the website.

As a (retired) soccer referee, I dreaded officiating matches where Covington Catholic was involved. The fans were always among the rudest, most disrespectful, and mean-spirited that I've encountered--and I've refereed for a long time at almost every level of the game!
Student after student has come forward over the years to try and shed light on the abuses that not just LGBT students faced, but students of color. Racial epithets and slurs were commonplace in the halls.
My point is that what we're seeing in the (many) videos circulating shouldn't come as a shock. It's a continuation of a long and disgusting pattern of toxicity & abuse that has been allowed & even encouraged at all levels of the school and, as far as I can tell, from the diocese.

I see you white church leaders (a whole lot of Roman Catholics) running to the aid of the young men wearing #MAGA hats who intimidated Nathan Phillips.
POC know that smerk. We've seen it before. Whiteness will absolve those young men. POC will be left to absorb the pain... Again

@trsherrill
Women know that smirk too. The fact that so many of my fellow white moms are leaping to defend those disrespectful young men instead of grabbing their own boys by the ear and telling them they won't tolerate that kind of behavior shames us all.#wecandobetter #CovingtonCatholic
ON EDIT:
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/22/1828373/-Covington-Catholic-It-Could-Have-Been-Me
Some have criticized me and others for being quick to judgement and that the initial videos that surfaced did not tell the whole story about what happened with the young men from Covington Catholic. After watching multiple videos, of multiple lengths, from multiple angles - my judgement on the actions of the young men stands. They were wrong. They attempted to intimidate a Native American elder who was doing his best to diffuse what he felt was a potentially volatile situation. Please note that I say I am condemning the actions of the young men, I am not condemning them as human beings, we all have inherent dignity and we all make mistakes. I hope with reflection and pastoral counseling, these young men will learn and grow from this experience.
Why did I feel confident to make the assessment that I did when I saw those first videos and why do I stand by it today?
Because it could have been me.
I know that look.

Does that indicate anything?

(16,548 posts)Turns out, this group has been following Covington students around for years. Provoking them into wearing black face. Provoking them to mock minorities, like Mr. Phillips.
If not for the BHIs, they wouldnt have had to do their tomahawk chops and war dance and stare down a tribal elder. The BHIs compelled them to do it.
Did you not watch the video?

Jeez, some people seem to be super invested in defending the little MAGATs.

(14,249 posts)I love how, whenever someone speaks out about racism and bigotry or - GOD FORBID - suggests that a white person engaged in it, instead of thinking about what they had to say, you immediately jump into the Google to find something they wrote that you think some Democrat somewhere might disagree with. And when, that fails, you try to find a photo of them to post (for some reason).
You're hoot, my little Boobear!

(51,308 posts)However, this story has already completely changed.
These kids are now heroes, it was all the fault of bad black men, Phillips is a bum who went AWOL and was never in Vietnam, the kids are going to the wh, and we Democrats are being painted as gullible fools with an agenda that we cant see beyond.
for those who need it. But this is how is playing out.
