Is Biden justified in doing this? ( I don't think so) Maybe I'm wrong

Biden’s Paid Speech Buoyed the G.O.P. in Midwest Battleground

Joseph R. Biden Jr. swept into Benton Harbor, Mich., three weeks before the November elections, in the midst of his quest to reclaim the Midwest for Democrats. He took the stage at Lake Michigan College as Representative Fred Upton, a long-serving Republican from the area, faced the toughest race of his career.

But Mr. Biden was not there to denounce Mr. Upton. Instead, he was collecting $200,000 from the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan to address a Republican-leaning audience, according to a speaking contract obtained by The New York Times and interviews with organizers. The group, a business-minded civic organization, is supported in part by an Upton family foundation.

Mr. Biden stunned Democrats and elated Republicans by praising Mr. Upton while the lawmaker looked on from the audience. Alluding to Mr. Upton’s support for a landmark medical-research law, Mr. Biden called him a champion in the fight against cancer — and “one of the finest guys I’ve ever worked with.”

This will give me pause to support Biden in primary ( if he runs), I do like him

I don't like it - it seems a bit sleazy to me but that is the way of he world.

Harry Truman may have been the last one who didn't.

sincere admiration, stemming from Mr. Upton’s role in crafting the 21st Century Cures Act after the death of Mr. Biden’s elder son, Beau, from cancer in 2015.

Bill Russo, a spokesman for Mr. Biden, said the research-funding legislation was the foundation of Mr. Biden’s relationship with Mr. Upton.

“It was one of the few bipartisan bills passed in an otherwise deeply divided and gridlocked Congress,” Mr. Russo said. “Vice President Biden believes to his core that you can disagree politically on a lot and still work together in good faith on issues of common cause — like funding cancer research.”'

One thing that is wrong with politics today is the idea that we must hate people on the other side of the aisle and criticize everything they do. VP Biden has been around long enough to know the importance of bipartisan support, unlike McConnell who obstructed everything just to spite President Obama.

6. Biden's support for cancer research is his legacy.

His son died of cancer. Biden launched the "moon shot" program to find a cure for cancer. He really means it.

This was a fundraiser for a cancer center. To Biden, cancer research transcends politics.

....and the organization is affiliated with the Frederick S. Upton Foundation, founded by Upton's grandparents. They have given millions of dollars to causes in and around southwestern Michigan.

This was NOT a political event.

I do however need his tone in regards to GOPers that are his friends/folks that he's worked with to change drastically if his attitude toward Upton is any clue. The "good" republicans are even worse than the bad ones because they lack the power and the courage to stand up to the awful ones. Instead you just get them going in lock step w/ the rest. I need the 2020 candidate to be a partisan in that regard because no one is going to break lines to work with a President Biden on progressive item. No one.

If Joe Biden runs and wins the Democratic nomination, I will vote for him without pause or hesitation.

The sport of taking potshots at our Dem leaders and/or 2020 contenders is ridiculous considering the treacherous times we live in, as in treason, as in, shattering the Rule of Law. Joe Biden, private citizen, has dedicated his efforts and energy to finding a cure for cancer. The Moonshot remember? Fred Upton is considered an important advocate for biomedical research to improve public health, so Biden's comments are personal and understandable.

Btw, Upton won his reelection bid by 5 points. Do we really believe that Biden's comments made that happen?

Any of our 2020 hopefuls is 1000x better than what the Republican establishment is offering: lawlessness and criminality. We need to lift our candidates/hopefuls up, not endlessly nitpick.

And yes, there are a lot of quality candidates to choose from. However, early nitpicking is not constructive in our efforts to nominate and ultimately elect a Democratic POTUS in 2020. All these candidates will be under the gun once the primary begins and the ultimate nominee will suffer the full onslaught of Republican slice&dice efforts. As Democratic members, I see no reason to bruise and batter our people before they get to the pitcher's mound. Let's give these hopefuls a chance to find their legs, show us what they're made of and what they know and don't know.

We don't need to do the Republican teardown work for them.
