Approval lowest in over a year amid shutdown

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 01/23/19 04:28 PM EST

... In an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll published Wednesday, just 34 percent of respondents said they approve of the job Trump is doing as president.

The new rating is down from 42 percent approval in the same poll in December, according to the AP.

A majority of respondents also blamed Trump for the shutdown, according to the poll ...

Joel Shannon, USA TODAY Published 10:21 p.m. ET Jan. 23, 2019

Unions representing air traffic controllers, airline pilots and flight attendants issued a joint statement Wednesday warning of "serious safety concerns" in the air travel industry if the partial government shutdown continues.

The shutdown has forced air traffic controllers, air marshals, Transportation Security Administration officers, FBI agents, and other safety staff to work without pay, the statement says.

"In our risk averse industry, we cannot even calculate the level of risk currently at play, nor predict the point at which the entire system will break. It is unprecedented," reads the statement issued by the presidents of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Air Line Pilots Association and the Association of Flight Attendants ...

... The month-long government shutdown has yet to yield his desired border wall; his second State of the Union address was cancelled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; and now, three major polls found that his approval ratings have taken a serious dip.

A Politico-Morning Consult poll, released Wednesday, showed the president now has a 40-percent approval rating—a 17-point dip from last polling.

Two other major polls, from CBS News and Associated Press-NORC, found that Trump now has a 36- and 34-percent approval rating, respectively. AP’s new data marks an eight percent drop from last month, while CBS’ figures represent a three-point dip.

According to the AP’s figures, this latest approval rating is the lowest in Trump’s two-year presidency ...

That would imply that Individual-1 had a 57% approval rating in that poll last time...and I don’t think he even got numbers like that in Rasmussen.

(WASHINGTON) — A strong majority of Americans blame President Donald Trump for the record-long government shutdown and reject his primary rationale for a border wall, according to a new poll that shows the turmoil in Washington is dragging his approval rating to its lowest level in more than a year.

Overall, 34 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance in a survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That’s down from 42 percent a month earlier and nears the lowest mark of his two-year presidency. The president’s approval among Republicans remains close to 80 percent, but his standing with independents is among its lowest points of his time in office.

“Trump is responsible for this,” said poll respondent Lloyd Rabalais, a federal contractor from Slidell, Louisiana, who’s not affiliated with either political party ...

... Nearly 6-in-10 voters — 57 percent — disapprove of Trump's job performance, compared to the 40 percent that approve. In addition, 54 percent of voters blame Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill for the government shutdown. Only 35 percent blame congressional Democrats.

There has been no progress on negotiations between Republican and Democratic leaders, as well as the president, to end the government shutdown — the longest partial government shutdown in history. Trump has not backed down from his request of $5.7 billion for his border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, which Democrats have not agreed to.

“As the government shutdown enters its second month, President Trump continues to carry the bulk of the blame among voters for the stalemate,” said Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president. “In this week’s poll nearly half of voters (49 percent) say the president is responsible — up 6 points since the shutdown began. At the same time, 35 percent of voters blame blame congressional Democrats, up 4 points, while 4 percent of voters blame congressional Republicans, down 3 points” ...

6. Majority of voters think Russia has dirt on Trump
Wed Jan 23, 2019, 11:55 PM
Jan 2019

... In the latest survey from Politico/Morning Consult, 57 percent of registered voters said it is either "very" or "somewhat" likely that Russia has compromising information on Trump. A plurality, 36 percent, said it's "very" likely, while another 21 percent said it's "somewhat" likely. This is compared to 31 percent who said it's either not very likely or not likely at all, and 13 percent who weren't sure.

Additionally, 43 percent of voters believe Trump's presidential campaign worked with Russia to influence the outcome of the 2016 race, while 38 percent said they don't think the campaign did so, and 19 percent weren't sure. Even more voters, 49 percent, said they believe Trump has tried to "impede or obstruct" the investigation into Russian interference in the election.

These findings come on a catastrophically bad polling day for Trump, whose disapproval rating in this survey has reached a new high of 57 percent ...

7. Trapped and tanking

Even this White House, infamous for self-delusion, must realize it’s in deep trouble. Two more polls released Wednesday show the depth of President Trump’s problem.

The Morning Consult-Politico poll finds that “57 percent of registered voters disapprove of Trump’s job performance — more than any other survey in Trump’s two years in office — while 40 percent approve. The 17-percentage-point deficit matches two previous lows of the Trump presidency.” Sixty percent of independents now disapprove of his performance. As time goes on, more Americans blame Trump for the shutdown (“49 percent of voters [say] he is responsible in the latest survey — up 6 points since the shutdown began”).

The CBS News poll has even worse numbers for Trump. In that survey, “Seven in 10 Americans don’t think the issue of a border wall is worth a government shutdown, which they say is now having a negative impact on the country. ... Mr. Trump’s overall approval rating has dipped three points from November to 36 percent today. Fifty-nine percent of Americans now disapprove of the job he is doing – a high for his presidency, although just one point above his previous high.” To add insult to injury, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) gets higher marks (47 percent) than Trump (35 percent) in handling the shutdown. Only 39 percent think Trump cares a lot or some about people like them; 53 percent say the same of Democrats. On the wall, 61 percent think the border can be secured without it, while 71 percent say it is not worth a shutdown ...

... Trump was never going to advance any proposal on a wide range of issues without Democratic-buy in. Now, having empowered them and weakened his own hand, he’ll either have to give more ground in future negotiations or meekly accept two years without a significant accomplishment ...
