Over the past few years, First Amendment auditing has also become a cutthroat YouTube industry, with auditors taking increasingly aggressive positions in encounters with police, knowing that if they are to get arrested or grabbed by a cop it will boost their views and build their online profiles. There are dozens of auditors on YouTube. While their videos typically get just tens of thousands of views, big channels or viral videos can net millions.
...
Worse, after another encounter with police and more than eight arrests over his audits, hes been under house arrest since July pending trial on the charges.
Not every encounter ends up in house confinement. Police sometimes let auditors go with just a few questions. Other times, officers, suspicious that the auditors are involved in terrorism or just mad that they refuse to reveal their names, have arrested the auditors.
...
There are those auditors who go out there and they dont care how nice the cop is, said Nathanial Thomas Plotner, a Los Angeles auditor who goes by the name Nasty Nathanial. They want that confrontation, so they can get a good video and get those high views.
Padillas videos are filled with the exact kind of insults that gets cops mad and viewers revved up. In the San Antonio strip mall video, for example, he repeatedly taunted each new officer who appeared on the scene. In another video, Padilla berated a police officer with anti-gay slurs, calling him a faggot.
...
Auditors also face ruthless competition from other auditors, who see them as rivals for views, fans, and YouTube ad revenue, especially as auditing has become more popular on YouTube. That puts a premium on encounters with police that will really pop. It also sparks some editorially dubious maneuvering. Phil claims some auditors will call police on themselves if an audit isnt producing a dramatic enough showdown.

Number one on my list...Professional Courtesy. If you are a cop or member of the courts you get a free pass.
#2. Who's going to arrest me, I'm a cop.
#3. I'm a member of the largest gang in the country, f..k with one of us and you have f..ked with all of us.
These are all things I've heard her and her friends say.
The 90% of cops that think they are above the law, make the other 5% look bad.
Not all cops are bad, every dept. has one cop that will write tickets to other cops, members of the court, like judges and prosecutors and their family members and won't lie to protect them.
Don't think cops won't harass citizens until they do something stupid

Any of those are a violation of the Constitution, their oath of office and the law.

(20,572 posts)Public areas are public. It is not illegal to film anything in public areas.
They need to have a reasonable suspicion to detain me.
A "good reason" to photograph/film is because I am interested in the subject/action.
Photography is not a crime.

(3,496 posts)Should be.
You can watch these clowns push officers and public officials into altercation.
Sure it's legal but they will not get a large audience of just filming and describing public buildings and office's. YouTube is proof of that.

(20,572 posts)ask themselves some questions:
1) Is what I am observing illegal?
2) Do I have a reasonable suspicion that this person is soon going to do something illegal?
3) Do I have a reasonable suspicion that this person just previously did something illegal?
If the answer to those questions are all "No", do not engage that person.
Problem solved.

These people are unnecessarily increasing the amount of conflict-situations until they stumble on one that they can monetize.
It is unavoidable that a cop will make a mistake. These people are simply generating conflict until they find a conflict that's bad enough.

(26,367 posts)This movement grew out of the Copwatch movement which was really about watching cops and how they deal with minorities and poor people.
Now this is mostly anti government types focusing on only one aspect of out of control cops.
Most of these auditors are right wingers. And like a lot of right wingers, they know they are getting fucked over but they cant quite figure out who is doing the fucking.
40 years of drug war, erosion of the 4th Amendment, 5th Amendment and civil asset forfeiture cooked up by Ronny Reagan and they just figured out a couple years ago cops are out of control.
My theory is having a Black Man as President drove these idiots over the edge. I shit you not - Ive seen these guys blame Obama for out of control cops.
God forbid anyone point out black people have it worse when it comes to cops and these people have a meltdown.
Most of these auditors are pro trump - the president who encourages cops to bounce peoples heads off cars as they are placed in custody.
That said there is one black auditor who has done a decent job. He actually had a landmark case that put cops on notice that arresting for filming can cost you your immunity.
