Editorial: Sen. Cory Gardner to break with Republicans on Trump's wall -- it's the right thing to do

Colorado senator’s spokesman says Gardner intends to vote for clean funding bill that would open the government with no border-security strings attached.

Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner’s spokesman told us Wednesday he intends to vote for a clean funding bill that would open the government with no increased border-security funding attached.

It’s the right thing to do.

We cannot stress enough that our democracy’s health is at stake in this political stalemate. When we allow funding measures and budgets to be tied to policy objectives and pet projects, everyone suffers. Both parties are guilty of the malpractice, as we noted at about this time last year when Democrats were the ones orchestrating a shutdown in pursuit of protections for immigrants without legal status who were brought to America as kids.

This 33-day, partial shutdown is driven by President Donald Trump’s demands for $5.7 billion for a wall on America’s southern border. It should stand as the last time our politicians abuse federal workers as though they are disposable pawns in a grander game of political chess.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, pledged to allow his members to vote on two bills Thursday and one would fund the government until Feb. 8 without the controversial money for Trump’s wall (it would keep border security funding at the same level). That clean continuing resolution takes the common-sense approach of alleviating the shutdown crisis and then allowing negotiations on immigration reform and border security.

Gardner know his chances are not good. He can scramble as much as he wants but we remember his years of being a lockstep republican without an original thought in his head.

I don't give a dam about his BS. We need that vote and enough to override a veto. I think Trump has lost his party and they will mostly abandon him. Remember the house controls appropiations and there won't be a whole lot of bacon for these "conservatives" to bring back their state.

Cardboard Cory's chances of re-election are slim. So expect a lot of "breaking with Trump" votes in the coming months.

It might help a little bit, but there are too many of us who can't wait to pound the pavement and man the phones to defeat him in 2020.

It’s such a lie. Who the hell refuses to allow a vote or sign a bill to protect immigrants? Don’t lump Democrats in with participating in what have become evil, greedy and craven Republican tactics.

This explains Trimp saying he won’t give the SOTU until the government opens, because his lackey Mitch has told him he’ll allow a vote today. You can believe they’re watching polls. Americans are pissed! Let’s hope the House can scramble for a bill prohibiting this hostage-taking nonsense before 2/8.

Most critical areas and introduce legislation to pay those workers? Like a bill to pay airtraffic and TSA? Nuke plant workers. Guess we run the risk that park workers, for instance, will never get paid but at least we protect the country from catastrophic events.

You know, last year when the democrats held substantial majorities in both houses so they could shutdown the government.

The sad truth is that a bunch of right wing nut jobs will believe this was possible.
