Donald Trump's medical reveals serious heart disease concerns, say doctors

Edit to add: this is from a year ago, I did not realize when posting.

He shouldn't be here?

Donald Trump's medical reveals serious heart disease concerns, say doctors
President at risk of having a stroke or heart attack

Harriet Agerholm
Thursday 18 January 2018 11:17

snip//

Cardiologists said Mr Trump was at risk of having a stroke or a heart attack, particularly since he is overweight and has a sedentary lifestyle. He should work to dramatically lower his LDL level to below 100 or even 70, they said.

Dr David Maron, director of preventive cardiology at Stanford University’s medical school, told The New York Times Mr Trump’s LDL level was surprising, since he was on powerful cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor.

He said he would “definitely” be worried about Mr Trump’s risk of having a heart attack if the President were one of his patients. When asked whether Mr Trump was in perfect health, Dr Maron said, “God, no.”

Dr Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Institute, was also concerned about the LDL cholesterol reading. “We’re talking about a 70-plus-year-old man who is obese and doesn’t exercise," he told The New York Times. "Just looking at the lab value, you would raise a big red flag.”

He said describing a man with such levels as in “excellent health” was “completely contradicted”.

Other doctors also disputed the White House physician’s assessment of the President’s health. CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta said coronary calcium CT scans carried out on the President showed he had a common form of heart disease.

The levels of calcium-containing plaque in the blood vessels that feed Mr Trump's heart had increased since 2009, Dr Gupta said,

In 2009 his coronary calcium score was 34. In 2013, it was 98. The score on his most recent medical assessment was 133. Anything over 100 “means he has heart disease,” Dr Gupta said.

79. I belonged to 2 golf clubs from age 60-74
Thu Jan 24, 2019, 09:40 PM
Jan 2019

In those clubs only members (and their guests which are few because of high fees)
can play. So in my 15 years with 2 different golf clubs, I was able to closely
observe several hundred members along with their physical appearance, their eating
habits (these clubs have good restaurants) and their drinking habits and their golfing
habits. Majority were over age 60, most were over-weight, most ate lots of red meat,
most drank generously and almost all rode in carts instead of walking.

What shocked me was heart attacks and strokes were rare! Most common death
pattern was cancer. I am speaking of golfers who played frequently as I did, so I got
to know them first hand.

In my own case I have high LDL and low HDL, and my doctor keeps prescribing me
pills to lower my cholesterol which I ignore. During my golfing days I ate fair amount
of high cholesterol foods because that food was common in the club restaurants.

My father and all my uncles on mothers side died in their 60's from heart attacks
from eating too many rich foods. So why am I still alive nearing age 79 and never
had a heart attack or stroke? What is different between me and my close relatives?

Only difference I can observe is none of them played golf, while I played a lot between
age 60 & 74 when I was member at golf clubs, where one can play unlimited golf for
one fixed monthly dues. It comes out cheaper than playing 3+ rounds every week at
public courses.

So my best guess is golf may be why Trump is still alive and has not had a heart attack
that we know about. He is likely to avoid one until age 80. But cancer does not care if
one gets exercise playing golf. Overweight and lots of red meat are cancer risk factors.
I will not be shocked if news comes out that Trump has cancer.

Thank you for taking the time to write all that. I found this in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Might interest you.

Golf and physical health

In providing moderate intensity physical activity, it is biologically plausible that golf could be expected to have beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, including ischaemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and colon and breast cancer.4 ,83 A review commissioned by the World Golf Foundation concluded that participating in golf can ‘yield a number of positive health and fitness effects’12 although methods were not stated and only health benefits were described. Frequent golfers perceive their physical health to be better than infrequent golfers.84
Cardiovascular system

Golf is associated with improvements in known risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including physical inactivity,38 blood lipid and insulin–glucose levels,57 ,66 ,85 body composition57 ,85 and aerobic fitness,57 although direct evidence and longitudinal trials assessing the medium-term and long-term impact of golf on coronary heart disease or cerebrovascular disease are lacking. Golf is reported as providing suitable exercise for patients with cardiac43 ,86 ,87 and stroke rehabilitation.88

Golf can provide a sufficient stimulus to improve aerobic fitness, but higher intensity exercise generates significantly improved cardiovascular adaption compared to playing golf.43 ,57 ,69 The effects of a season of golf on systolic blood pressure showed no significant difference in a controlled trial,57 while no consistent effect has been found measuring blood pressure during golf.64 ,67 ,86

There is an increased incidence of acute cardiac events during participation in sport89 and golf in particular.90–92 Golf players with new or unstable cardiac symptoms should consult a doctor.90 There is contradictory and inconclusive evidence regarding the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of automatic external defibrillators situated at golf courses.93–96 An extremely rare mechanism of ischaemic stroke linked to golf has been described.97

Thu Jan 24, 2019, 11:11 PM
Jan 2019

At age 58 I was having fainting spells at work in the mornings, rapid heart beats,
and panic attacks if alone in a large store. So I retired, and found out I also had
high blood pressure and was border-line diabetic.

I took up full time golf and now 20 years later, no longer fainting spells, no heart
problems and I got my blood sugar under control with 15 hours daily fasting. Right
now I honestly feel better than 20 years ago. Since I no longer play golf, I am doing
1 hour gym exercise every other day.

But please understand the distinction between occasional golfers and regular golfers.
Occasional golfers are more likely to experience cardiac events on a golf course.
