US Army wants a cannon that can hit Chinese warships in the South China Sea from 1,000 miles away

The US Army wants a cannon that can fire a round over 1,000 miles, with the aim to blow a hole in Chinese warships in the South China Sea should a conflict occur, according to Army senior leadership.

China has one of the world's largest navies, and there is significant evidence that it intends to use its growing military might to drive the US out of the region.

One hell of a 'lob job' to account for the earth curve and everything. Plus the wind and all that ...

Btw, what if the ship, you know, moves during the 10 minutes (or whatever) it takes after you fire the payload?

That's today's state-of-the-art in blow-shit-up.

IIRC, the Navy's doing a lot of research into railguns - accelerate a metal projectile to insane speeds (Mach 5+) with big lines of electromagnets and send it to smash the Bad Guys into fine red mist. Essentially a big, expensive, but very high-tech cannon.
