federal worker with kid on breathing tube now regrets voting for trump

15-month-old Harper was born prematurely and needs a breathing tube to live.
Her dad Chris isn't being paid amid the shutdown and tells @RandiKayeCNN voting for Trump is a choice he regrets "100%."

we here on DU get it, it is finally sinking into the American psyche what is really happening.

I was so worried this morning I sent a e-mail to my Senator Whitehouse. After watching Lawrence O'Donnell with Faye and Airline officials this has got to stop, and also the Senator from Colorado things are coming to a head.

1. Trump doesn't care. Mitch doesn't care either.

2. If a charity steps in and helps, Trump, Ross, and the rest will claim it all worked out for the best. Republicans will say this proves that charity/churches, etc. does a better job than government in helping people. Never once considering that they are the cause of the suffering.

Trump will also claim those helping understand the need for a border wall and why people must suffer to get one - and that's why they're helping.

The sickness of it all. It's beyond disgusting.

Tragic that it took a sick wee one to examine his decision in 2016. But I would never bust on a parent with a desperately sick child. Been there, done that.

Hopefully, this man joins us in 2020 to thrown the Trumpster and his odious enablers to the curb.

If it doesn't affect me directly then I don't care. I feel for the man and his child. I don't know them and will never meet them in my life, but I can understand and say, "raise my taxes to help make sure that Harper, and any other kid like him can get the care that they need". What I fail to understand is how a segment of the population can hear about children in cages and a young girl dying from dehydration and think, "Well the parents shouldn't have brought her over the border" rather than to understand as parents how desperation could lead to that decision. Think about this, if his kid wasn't threatened, would this guy be "regretting" his decision?

Yes, many of these people only see the world through their own lens. As was the case with the woman in Florida's panhandle suffering the effects of hurricane damage and then the shutdown. Her reported complaint? The Trumpster wasn't hurting the 'right' people. It's a totally selfish, myopic view.

If this shutdown begins hurting the Trumpster crowd, the dedicated base, then maybe this shutdown will have a thin silver lining. That being said, I personally can't dump on a parent with a grievously ill child, particularly if he's willing to open his eyes, even if it's only a little. So, okay his regret is not coming from a pure attitude but at least it's a start. And we've got to start somewhere because Trump is a total disaster, his ability to inflict massive damage a very real and scary prospect.

so I doubt he would care much about this precious little one.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/trump-files-donald-sick-infant-medical-care/

...."Johnston writes that medical insurance had consistently been provided to the family through Fred Sr.’s company. This coverage was crucial for Freddy’s grandson (Donald’s grandnephew), who suffered from seizures and later developed cerebral palsy. So crucial, in fact, that a letter sent from a Trump lawyer to the insurer after the patriarch’s death in 1999 said that “all costs” for the sick child’s care should be covered, regardless of caps on the plan or medical necessity, according to Johnston. That didn’t last long.

A week after the lawsuit was filed in court, Freddy’s son (Donald’s nephew) received a letter informing him that the health insurance would be discontinued, meaning his ill son would be left without coverage. Donald openly admitted to the New York Daily News that he and his siblings took this action out of revenge."...

something until it impacts THEM. Then, and only then, do the lightbulbs all come on at once. It's because they're all fundamentally selfish, and often, not particularly bright.

Point 2 *might* be resoled to some extent with better education, but the selfish thing is a real problem. Maybe along with better education (not more $ necessarily but actual school reform) there could be some kind of community stewardship that starts early in childhood to help people learn to empathize and see beyond their own needs. I don't know.
