It's not just that they switched from Obama to Trump. They're dug in. Getting someone to recognize and admit their mistakes is VERY hard. I think our best bet is to get a candidate that excites people, get new voters registered and work like hell to GOTV. I'm afraid the folks in this video are a lost cause.

And those Obama voters who did cross to Trump look a lot like Republicans. The AFL-CIOs Podhorzer analyzed raw data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study , out in the spring, and found that Obama-Trump voters voted for Republican congressional candidates by a 31-point margin, Republican Senate candidates by a 15-point margin and Republican gubernatorial candidates by a 27-point margin. Their views on immigration and Obamacare also put them solidly in the GOP camp.
Democratic analysts who are looking to solve the partys problem by appealing to this small group of Obama-Trump voters are pointing themselves to a group that by and large is a Republican group now, Podhorzer told me. The bulk of Obama-Trump voters are not fed-up Democratic voters; they are Republican voters who chose Obama in 2012. As such, few are available in 2018 or 2020. Democrats should instead appeal broadly to working-class voters, he said.
In 2008, a larger-than-usual number of Republican voters went with Obama during an extraordinary time, when the economy was in free fall and an incumbent Republican president was deeply unpopular. ANES polling found that 17 percent of Obama voters in 2008 had been for George W. Bush in 2004, compared with the 13 percent of Trump voters, the same survey found, who supported Obama at least once. These people arent Obama-Trump voters as much as they were Bush-Obama voters.

(12,618 posts)They voted for Obama because the economy had collapsed and the Iraq War had become a joke. McCain was just more of the same. Even Indiana went blue in 2008. Once Obama rescued the economy, these idiots went back to being what they are: idiots.

(56,829 posts)Hadn't thought of it that way - the people that voted for Obama in 2008 were mostly Republican/Bush voters who were pissed about the economy, not Democrats who hadn't voted in a long time that voted Obama and then flipped to Trump.

(19,240 posts)Those that don't have any real politics except that they want the POTUS to be an impressive man. Obama was/is an Impressive Man. Neither McCain nor Romney was an Impressive Man.
This is no way is meant as criticism of Obama. He is/was a great president. He just happened to look and sound very masculine.

(130,016 posts)I know where my sister lives, there were a number of Republicans on her street who had the Obama yard signs and were pretty much through with the Darth Cheney-Shrub neocon mess and were getting killed by the economic crash. But since Drumpf did not (at least initially) pander to the neocons, back they came right into the GOP's arms.

(20,255 posts)The woman who has Huntington's disease in her family, who would not be able to get health insurance before the ACA, said she would still vote for Trump.
The couple who 1) decided to have a 3rd child and 2) are complaining that they are still paying off medical bills for that child, would still vote for Trump.
The woman who had been a social worker for the state of Pennsylvania before her whole department was laid off, said she would still vote for Trump. Her boyfriend said they should cut more than 18% from the Health and Human Services budget. Who the fuck does he think she worked for? They had to sell their house and they're living in an RV park, yet he's "very happy the direction the country is going".
I'm hoping the woman, Cathy, married to the RWNJ Fox watching author, has filed for divorce.

(34,857 posts)They ain't coming back. They were never Democrats. A decent amount voted Democratic at the presidential level in 2008 because it was an extremely dire and crazy moment where the party in power was so crazily unpopular (even more so than Trump currently). Four years later and a lot of those voters switched back to the Republicans in 2012...and then even more in 2016. It was a brief anomaly that had dwindled the last two presidential election cycles.
It's just too few of voters to focus on when the message is not likely to resonate. They're very likely less than ten percent overall of those who voted in 2016. The real focus has to be on the voters who sat the election out. We need to find a way for those people to feel engaged again.

(15,396 posts)What is this? The 10,000 fucking "human interest" story where the MSM sits down with some fucking white hayseeds from Dumbfuckistan, 'Murikkka explaining how they; "just love them some orange shitgibbon"!
I'm fucking sick of it. No matter how many times the MSM tries to present us these people and their fucked-up excuses for supporting this absolute waste of fucking human skin, they won't convince me that voting for this complete fuckstick was somehow "justified".
Meanwhile, ask yourself how many of these "human interest" stories have you seen from voters that just gave Democrats a 10,000,000 vote win in the Midterms? Crickets
I don't care if they thought Donnie Short Fingers was going to give them all unicorns that shit Rainbow Sherbet, their vote for this absolute amphibian turd CAN'T EVER BE JUSTIFIED
I don't give a fuck how many creepy "fireside chats" the MSM tries to cram down my throat.
Stupidity is NOT news
