A Health Insurance Story

For the past several months, I've been experiencing a strange sensation in my upper chest. It wasn't pressure, it was more like a tensing of the muscles. It was uncomfortable but my heart wasn't racing and I could control my breathing. I went to my primary care physician who did a complete physical including an EKG. In order to rule out any heart issues, he arranged for me to have a stress test.

I took the test on Monday afternoon and following the test, I crashed. My blood pressure dropped precipitously, I became clammy and I had tunnel vision. The cardiologist immediately sent me to the hospital for an angiogram. They found one coronary artery had a 90% blockage and they installed a stent.

By the next morning, I felt so much better I couldn't believe it. I guess the heart likes to get its blood!

Each of the doctors I saw were professional and explained everything in great detail. The nurses and staff were fantastic and the hospital was clean, modern and comfortable. Even the food was quite good!

Four days after the incident, I was back at work.

Throughout my career, I've been incredibly fortunate to have excellent health insurance paid for by my employers. So, I never think about getting medical care when it's needed. I only have to show my insurance card and everything is taken care of.

This experience has shown me how incredibly wrong our health systems are. Every American should have access to the kind of care I received. Every American should be able to get treated without fear of bankruptcy. We are such a rich nation that it boggles my mind that all of us don't have these protections.

It will be instructive to review the bills from the hospital and doctors. I suspect the charges will be over $50,000. Very few people could pay that out of pocket. If I didn't have insurance, I'd likely be a candidate for a heart attack.

What is wrong with our country that Republicans don't want people healthy?

I'm glad to hear everything is OK and that you were able to get the excellent care you needed!

I was just reading this morning how millions more are uninsured in America since Trump took office, thanks to Republican policies of strangling Obamacare.

I've read stories of people going bankrupt from medical bills even when they have insurance! This is such a disgrace in a country like ours.

I, too, scratch my head .... why don't Republicans want all Americans to have health care? It's totally unacceptable. And, it's not like they have any different ideas or proposals .... all they want to do is get rid of Obama's crowning achievement. Because, Obama.

It's mind boggling, isn't it?

Then get fired 2 months after your surgery and know if you let your insurance lapse you will never be insurable again and that $350,000 bill that was just paid would have wiped your family out. It happened to me in 2002 before Obama care and almost broke me anyway trying to pay my bills on unemployment along with COBRA so I would continue coverage for 9 months. I've still never recovered finacially.

I know whereof I speak.

Bad enough you have to deal with it, and then on top of all that, worry that you can't pay your medical bills. This is a travesty. Every other country in the world has it figured out except us. (well, mainly the dumbass GOPers who feel as though you have to prove you are worthy to be able to see a doctor). The more I think about it, the more it makes my blood boil. NO ONE should be financially crippled for the rest of their life just because they got sick! And, COBRA is a joke.

I never had an employment problem in the previous 30 years of my career before then. After being fired and the fear of being found I was a cancer survivor and maybe getting fired again, I became too defensive and would end up being my own worst enemy. I could never keep another job for over 2 or 3 years and actually had 3 experiences where I had panic attacks and was fired on the spot. I've finally reached retirement, but I still have dreams about all the terrifying employment experiences in my life... it's weird..

A Democrat is someone who, when she or he feels grateful for something very important to them, immediately has empathy and concern for those who don’t have access to that thing. A Democrat starts thinking about how much these things matter and why things are so unequal and unfair.

It’s the opposite of “Screw you, I’m all right.”

So glad you had such good care and are feeling better!

I've voted in every election I could since 1976 and only once have I voted for a Republican, (he was an excellent local judge and he was unopposed!). Except for that time, I've always voted a straight Democratic ticket.

Enjoy your weekend, enough.

I never wanted anyone to experience what I had to go through. It didn't matter to me any more. It was others that might not be able to cope and do something stupid.

There is no reason anybody should have to go through what you went through when we have science that shows it’s preventable. The only reason you don’t know about it is that people’s health is considered less important than the health of the meat, dairy, and egg industries.

Thanks for the links, athena.

I'm fairly certain my condition was caused by my eating habits which have often resembled a teenager's! This experience will not go unheeded.
