https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/Coldest-Blast-Years-Heading-Midwest-Great-Lakes?cm_ven=cat6-widgetMidwesterners are in for a dangerous round of bitterly cold air and extreme wind chills as January draws to a close. Temperatures are expected to bottom out from Tuesday to Thursday, hitting their coldest levels in several years in parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes. Less-extreme but still-noteworthy cold will overspread much of the nation east of the Misssissippi by midweek.
This Arctic outbreakwell advertised in long-range weather modelsis in line with seasonal forecasts issued as far back as November by The Weather Company. As we discussed in a post on January 18, the outlooks gave increasingly high odds to unusually cold weather in the eastern United States toward the latter half of this winter.
The culprit behind next weeks cold blast is a lobe of the stratospheric polar vortex predicted to set up shop across the Great Lakes, far south of its usual position. The extremely cold upper-level low will pull a frigid dome of surface high pressure from central Canada into the central and eastern U.S. as the week unfolds. On Friday, ahead of the main event, temperatures fell below zero as far south as northern Missouri, with wind chills dipping below 20°F as far south as Iowa, reported weather.com.

tell him to buy and wear some pantyhose.
I was in Minnesota 2 years ago when that polar vortex descended. Those temps are brutal.

(65,427 posts)The blast looks likes it's coming out of Manitoba, not Alberta, like normally happens.
In KS, you might be far enough south and west
I hope I'm right for your sake, cuz they're talking -24 here in the Chicago area.

(32,756 posts)Got a new gas space heater that doesn't need electric to work. So if the lights go out, happens during storms, I'll stay warm and my pipes won't burst.

(65,427 posts)... Of electric pipe trace for the basement bathroom
Oddity of our house, is that we live on a corner and garage is half the basement.
The other half is rec, utility, laundry rooms and a half bath
So the west wall is not(!) underground, but exposed to the elements
So the cold water pipe to the sink and washer is at risk.
But, copper conducts so well, I only need to get part of the pipe hot, and just run water now and then
Fingers crossed
