Rubio: Trump declaring national emergency for border wall 'a terrible idea'

I do not recall ever agreeing with him but give Rubio credit.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Sunday that he would oppose an effort by President Trump to declare a national emergency to construct a wall along the southern border, calling the prospect a "terrible idea."

"I hope he doesn't do it. I don't think it's leverage," Rubio said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Rubio argued that an emergency declaration would likely be tied up in the courts, and would set a poor precedent for future administrations.

"It doesn't mean that I don't want border security," he said. "I do. I just think that's the wrong way to achieve it. It doesn't provide certainty. And you could very well wind up in sort of a theatric victory at the front end and then not getting it done."

Which is precisely why Trump will probably do it. He can't stand to lose on this. He'd rather burn the whole house down than lose.

His base might like it, but it would be wildly unpopular among independents, who he needs in 2020. His base isn't big enough to win 2020 on its own.

instead of trying to play lemming to GOP stupidity, he would have a chance. He is smart and speaks well, but his lack of principles and dignity work against him every time. Also, he needs to understand that the GOP uses Hispanic politicians for a while, while they need them, after that they are sent to the basement with a red stapler ("Office Space", the movie).
