Stocks decline on poor reports from Caterpillar, Nvidia

Stocks fell sharply Monday as traders fretted over weak earnings from Caterpillar and a big cut in revenue guidance from chipmaker Nvidia.

The Dow fell 400 points as Caterpillar lagged. The S&P 500 dropped 1.4 percent, led lower by the tech and industrial sectors. The Nasdaq declined 1.7 percent.

Caterpillar shares fell more than 8 percent after the industrial giant posted weaker-than-expected earnings for the fourth quarter. The company said its sales in the Asia/Pacific region declined because of lower demand in China. Caterpillar is considered a bellwether for global trade given the company's exposure to overseas markets. The company also issued disappointing guidance.

Nvidia, meanwhile, dropped 16 percent after slashing its fourth-quarter revenue guidance to $2.2 billion from $2.7 billion. The chipmaker said "deteriorating macroeconomic conditions, particularly in China," impacted demand for its graphics processing units.

things that never get talked about. They are the owner of what was known as GE's Locomotive Manufacturing Unit, and,if you have been watching the Railroad Industry, well,it is not buying Locomotives due to changes in Commodity Shipping business and especially with the loss of China markets.. BTW,these same Rails are dumping personnel and moth balling hundreds of locomotives are dead lined out here in the Arizona Desert out of sight from the public.

Next big loss for Cat is,the Farming business. Until that economy improves, well,Cat is not going to be selling 250 thousand dollar Tractors as well as 350 thousand dollar Combines. And,with the looming Farm Auctions that are in the forecast, there will be more hurt to come.

Watching for Triton Financial to make head lines, they are one of the largest Farm Equipment Lenders and are directly associated with Cat.
