A qualifier race for Alaska's Iditerod has been cancelled...it's too warm (Original Post) brooklynite Jan 2019 OP
No one is going to run pups without a decent snow layer. akraven Jan 2019 #1
So there's not enough snow to race the dogs? Ohiogal Jan 2019 #2
I'd take 'em but neighbordogs would object! akraven Jan 2019 #4
I think she meant snow, not dogs... Wounded Bear Jan 2019 #5
LOL! We have actually railroaded snow to Anchorage in the past. akraven Jan 2019 #7
That's OK, they truck sand into South Florida for the beaches, too... Wounded Bear Jan 2019 #8

Anchorage area hasn't had one in years. Fairbanks does, much to Anchorage's chagrin.

Actually, most sled dogs are the calmest, quietest neighbors! Well, got to have their twice a day howl, usually 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

There's plenty of snow in Fairbanks, but Anchorage is 355 miles from here.

However, the assholes who run that shithole city won't pay the RR fees anymore. So fuck 'em!

But I didn't have to shovel the sand!

We did about 7 dozen sandbags for the last flood in Nenana; my arms hurt for weeks! Snow's easier!

I lived in Willow for 6 years in the early 90s. Knew a lot of mushers, did a little dogsledding myself.

But even then the weather was changing, the winters getting warmer, the snow getting less. The last 2 or 3 years I was there, the Iditarod had to start from Willow instead of Anchorage, because there wasn't enough snow.

My eldest still lives in Anchorage, I get firsthand weather reports, so I've been following the warming year after year.

How it used to be, is no more.

no snow to mention, rain off and on, but I think we might be below averages so far.

Hell, it hasn't even froze here in the lowlands yet, or at least not more than a couple of times. It gets cold enough to frost up the windows on the car, but haven't had a hard freeze yet.
