Pelosi puts tight grip on talk of Trump impeachment

BY MIKE LILLIS - 01/29/19 08:32 PM EST

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is keeping her troops in line on one of the most divisive issues facing Democrats internally and the country more broadly: the impeachment of President Trump.

As the minority leader over the past two years, Pelosi faced a small but intensifying push from rank-and-file Democrats to oust the president — a movement that won two floor votes in the last Congress and the support of 66 House Democrats in early 2018.

Yet in the weeks since taking the Speaker’s gavel, Pelosi has tamped down the impeachment talk in her ranks, according to multiple lawmakers, arguing it is important to allow special counsel Robert Mueller to wrap up his investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to sway the 2016 election.

The effort is paying dividends, winning over even the most liberal Trump critics in the caucus while dissuading new acolytes to the impeachment effort, which has struggled to find a foothold in the new Congress.

Besides, I don't know that McConnell will move to hold a trial if the House votes to impeach. There is nothing in the constitution that sets forth a mandated time frame for a trial to commence after articles of impeachment are passed.

With that in mind, we have to have the strongest case possible. Because, if McConnell refuses to have a trial, the members of the House need to appeal to the public to put pressure on the Senate to hold a trial.

get himself impeached. He breaks laws every fucking day right in front of the world! Besides that, he has proven himself unfit time and time again!

Now I wait for the day when Mueller's report details his and his henchmen's crimes and I bet there still will not be an impeachment. I just do not get it why we can't hold him, and them, responsible.

The only hope for getting Republicans on board is a report so damning that he has no defenders left.

The Mueller report will tell. Also, we need to get McConnell in the corner with his Russian buddies.

Some republicans must be capable of figuring out that putting traitors in control of their party may not turn out too well.

I personally think things will move faster than an impeachment vote and trial when everything comes to light. He'll be run out of town within hours of its release.
