As more Democratic presidential candidates jump into the partys Lord of the Fliesesque 2020 primary, Donald Trump is watching from the sidelines with a mix of glee and trepidation. He loves the bloody nature and how ugly it will be, a Republican close to the president told me. He thinks theyre going to tear each other apart, added a former White House official briefed on Trumps thinking. But its the potential candidate who hasnt declared that Trump fears. Trump is very, very worried about [Joe] Biden getting in, the former official said. He sees him as the biggest threat because he can win Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan.
Whether or not Biden enters the race, Trumps plunging poll numbers in the wake of the government shutdown have raised alarms in some corners of Trumpworld about the presidents re-election prospects. Its a shitshow, a veteran of the 2016 campaign told me. The person who is drawing much of the blame is Trumps 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale. Theres a revolt against Parscale, said the former official.

Treasonous Trump should be worried.

(7,596 posts)That's way too old for anybody to be president. He's had about 30 years to run and it didn't work out for him. Sorry, but his time has passed. Same goes for Sanders.
I'll support him if he wins the nomination, but I highly doubt that will happen anyway. There are more appealing candidates who aren't carrying around almost 50 years of political baggage.

(10,721 posts)...lovable Uncle Joe who pals around with Obama eating burgers and ice cream. But there are reasons why Biden has come up far short in his previous attempts (plural) to get the nomination.
The media has helped convince people that winning over white males who voted for Trump is the key to Democratic success in 2020. It's really quite insane.

(10,721 posts)And, yes, they are blue states. The Democratic nominee has won MI and PA in 6 of the last 7 presidential elections. The Democratic nominee has won WI in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections. And we had some big wins in those states in a midterm election for which Democrats are notorious for not turning out.
The lone exception, of course, was 2016. When Clinton, vilified for 25 years and victimized by Comey, was narrowly defeated in each of those states. To say nothing of other shenanigans.
Trump was the "change" candidate. Now we're 2 years into his administration, the most corrupt and despicable in the modern era. With approval numbers that all but guarantee his defeat.
Harris can win MI, PA and WI. As well as NC, FL, GA, AZ, etc. Turnout will be record-breaking if she's our nominee. Bank on it.
Galraedia
(5,030 posts)And how did that turn out again? Clinton couldn't even defeat the weakest GOP candidate in U.S. History. Now the establishment wants to push Kamala Harris like she's the second coming of Obama just for the sake of having a female nominee. Biden has a better shot of actually winning in those states. We have too much damn corruption in the White House to be playing Clinton 2.0.
Garrett78

(10,721 posts)...being dismissive of the value of nominating a woman is what constitutes sexism.
Biden would be long forgotten if Obama hadn't picked him as VP. Those with short memories only think of him as lovable Uncle Joe who pals around with Obama eating burgers and ice cream. But there are reasons Biden has twice come up way short in his attempts to get nominated. Biden has quite the history of gaffes and sexism.
Turnout for Harris will be record-breaking if she's our nominee. Believe it or not, winning over white males who support Trump is not the key to taking back the White House.
Galraedia
(5,030 posts)Unfortunately, she can't due to the age limit requirement of being at least 35 to run for president. I also support Elizabeth Warren over Harris, but she lacks charisma and because of that she's unlikely to win the nomination.

2. Vice President Biden has yet to put his name in and we might have to accept that he may never.
3. Senator Harris is uniquely a different candidate with her own set of qualifications and experiences.

(5,030 posts)Not sure how that makes me sexist. Now that I look back I wish the Democratic nominee was Bernie Sanders. The Clinton campaign was run by stupid people like John Podesta, who was hacked using a simple phishing email telling him to reset his password. Neither Gmail nor any other email service is going to direct you through email to reset your password.

Already we are getting clobbered on the the, "Democrats want to force people off their work place insurance and will raise taxes hugely",front. (6,050 posts)Unfortunately Biden was an active vp during the period when Democrats lost over 1000 seats around the country. Our party was strong in 2008 and incredibly, much weaker, in 2016.

(10,721 posts)I guess Obama winning 2 landslides was a fluke, whereas Trump winning wasn't.
Racism, sexism and a bullshit media narrative has quite a hold on people. It's so bad that there are people convinced that the key to us taking back the White House is winning over white males who voted for Trump, as opposed to turning out our base in huge numbers. Seriously, let me repeat that: there are folks who think the key to winning back the White House is winning over white males who voted for Trump. Read that sentence again. It's utter madness.
It's the same contradictory and ignorant nonsense Sanders and members of the media were promoting after the 2016 election. "Identity politics is bad. White working class voters and their economic anxiety are the key to victory." And now you've got folks convinced that PA, MI and WI are red states all because of 2016--never mind every other presidential election since the 1980s when those states were won by the Democratic nominee (none of whom faced 25 years of vicious attacks and a last minute announcement by the FBI Director about their being under investigation).

Many women already don't view him as much of an ally.
And his eagerness to get along with the other side -- which was his problem in the Anita Hill hearings -- recently was on display again. He took $200K to speak at an event for a Republican running for Congress, and justified this by saying he appreciated his vote on cancer research. But the same Rep led an effort to repeal the ACA. Without health insurance it won't matter if there are better cancer treatments out there.

Demsrule86
(68,825 posts)I noticed he had moved left, but the great thing is given his history which you describe, it will be very difficult to paint him as a lefty and tax raiser who will take your workplace insurance (already starting and look what happened to Clinton with that one). He will also negate Schultz and Bloomberg who would rather see Trump re-elected than have a true progressive win...all about taxes for those bastards. Biden is the stealth progressive who will enact good policy assuming we take the Senate. I would also add that Biden will be able to get some of the never Trumper's votes...I am not sure Sen. Harris at the top of the ticket could do that. I would like to see her as VP though.
pnwmom
(109,025 posts)We'll see, obviously.

Demsrule86
(68,825 posts)are informed it would end workplace insurance. It would be a giant undertaking and cost a great deal of money and jobs as well...in the insurance industry. You can't just ignore this. We would have the same sort of result as Clinton did with Clinton care. We only have on shot at getting this right...just rolling out the ACA was very tough. A public option will lead to universal coverage...medicare for all I don't know...but I will be pleased if everyone is covered.
pnwmom
(109,025 posts)because we need to subsidize jobs in the insurance industry?
Won't a public option just be an end to the same goal? I would be fine to start with a public option, but I don't think the public would be afraid of Medicare for all if they learned that their employers would be paying into it, just as they are buying their health insurance now.
