Though they are only thirteen percent of the population they provided Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton with well over 25% of their votes. Their voices should be heard and their pain should be felt. As a Jewish person if a photo arose from 1984 or any year of a Democratic governor in a SS uniform and his pal in a concentration camp uniform replete with a Yellow Star I would be apoplectic. I suspect many of my African American brothers and sisters feel the same way.

(6,859 posts)African Americans are the backbone of the Democratic Party, and by extension, this country. If Northam is a thorn in their side, hes a thorn in mine.

(42,641 posts)There is no way to excuse dressing in a KKK Kostume, or in blackface, if one is not acting in a movie.
Some will insist it shows only poor judgment. I disagree. It shows either a fundamental unawareness of the reality of US history, or that one does not care.

(8,419 posts)84 was the time of the Reagan revolution. Huge cultural change on college campuses across the US. A great deal of pressure to join the revolution. That being said, if you had any fucking common sense you knew these people were fucking assholes. So personally, I don't give a flying fuck if his racist fucking ass is getting flamed. He wasn't fucking 13 he was fucking 23 and didn't just get drunk or stoned and make a stupid decision. His fucking ignorant ass decided to use is for his yearbook page.
He was a suck up mother fucking wimp at 23, which leads me to believe his is a suck up mother fucking wimp in his late 50s.

(10,422 posts)I'm looking around DU confused about why so many Liberal white people are comfortable with excusing away racism. I don't care who did it, there needs to be a standard. As a black woman, my heart hurts and my stomach is flipping. I doubt many people know what that feels like. My sister, who lives in Virginia, is devastated that she voted for someone who would do that. I hope he resigns and stops stretching this out. It's a painful reminder, at the beginning of the month that should celebrate African Americans, that we will still have a very long way to go.

(7,277 posts)The Democratic candidates for 2020 have called on Northam to resign. Many of the posters here are refighting the resignation of Al Franken. Its wrong. Its hurtful. Im very sorry.
Northam will resign. Justin Fairfax, Lt. Governor will be sworn in - an African American Governor. These wounds will heal. I hope.

(7,277 posts)I understand Justin Fairfax is a good man. I hope Virginians can find comfort in the fact that two years after Trump was elected, their Governor is an African American. Perhaps black families can tell their children, Tump is not America. We are better than that.

(146,351 posts)I'm sure that many, many people who voted for him in Virginia are feeling betrayed right now.
That's why I keep saying that Northam should ask black voters in Virginia what he should do. We know what their answer would be.
