Ralph Northam was and has been a Zell Miller type Conservative Republican.

Northam voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004. In 2007, Northam ran for the VA state Senate in the 2007 as a Democrat instead of a Republican.
Virginia Democratic Party could have avoided Northam if Warner,Kaine,and McAuliffe had helped Aneesh Chopra, the Chief Technology Officer under President Obama, win the Democratic Primary for Lt Governor in 2013.
