HOUSTON - A tiger was found Monday at an abandoned southeast Houston home, according to police.
Police said the caged female tiger was found at a home in the 9400 block of East Avenue J.
An anonymous tipster reported seeing the animal about a week ago, according to BARC.
The tipster said they were at the house to smoke marijuana and thought they were hallucinating when they first saw the tiger, according to police.
The tiger was found in a "rinky-dink" cage in the garage, which was not locked, police said. The garage was secured with a screwdriver and a nylon strap, according to police.
"A pretty small cage inside basically a garage in a house that didn't look like it was in the best shape. So it was important that we get it out of that situation," Lara Cottingham, with the city of Houston, said.
BARC officers found the tiger on Monday. They called Houston police, who were able to secure a warrant and remove the tiger.
The tiger was tranquilized in order to move it out of the house, officials said.

(26,355 posts)They specialize in caring for big cats and other big wild animals, and they know how to do it right.
I've visited there a couple times, it's quite a place. And they have some horror stories to tell about some of the cats they've taken in.
Apparently, there are more tigers illegally kept in captivity by assholes in Texas than there are wild tigers left in the world.

That would be great if they could take the tiger there!
Thank you!!!

>>Thank you for your e-mail and for your concern for this Tigress. I am watching live now KHOU streaming the transfer of her from the Human Society/Animal Control to a Sanctuary. There has been no mention of which sanctuary she is going to, but it sounds like shes in for a much better life than shes had in that small cage, and we trust that people there are doing whats best for her.
Sincerely,

Sounds like a reply and good news for this Tigress!

(9,540 posts)and save tigers and other exotic cats like this one that have been abandoned or abused. Ask for Bobbi Brink, the owner. She's a saint.
They have a football field-sized enclosure to run and play in that includes a pond, waterfall, climbing equipment and grass.

They get excellent medical care, too.

What's wrong with this picture is what's wrong with this picture, of course. After all, the story here isn't about all the boring people who don't have pot-smokers enacting a real-life SNL skit in their garages.

Just read that Texas has a statewide network of sanctuaries to take care of big cats in need of homes. Apparently these "pet" cats have often resulted from inbreeding, etcetera, and typically lack the excellent genetics zoos seek in animals that will be allowed to reproduce. So best guess is she'll live out her life comfortably in one of these sanctuaries with others like her.
In Sync Exotics has dozens of big cats, and each of their stories is posted to read.

This one's at Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, TX, a very well endowed sanctuary obviously and apparently world renowned.
